Statutory rape: minors can't consent.

Other than responsibilities defined by absolute biological necessity (e.g. Breastfeeding) is there any reason the roles of father/husband need to be different than parent/spouse?

Did you even read the article? It's very specifically about how the deployment of masculinity by butch lesbians can be just as sexist as among men. Furthermore, it doesn't make the claim that masculinity itself is evil, just that certain aspects may be bad.

I was told yesterday that since "THIS movement" is anti-feminist (supported by the wikipedia entry) I would have to drop my "shitty feminist label" to do much for men's rights. I disagree - and still do - because the issues (not to be confused with ideology) don't disagree with contemporary patriarchy theory. My question, which remained without satisfactory answer, was simply "why does it matter if I believe in patriarchy if I stand with you on almost everything else?"

Science deals with those things. Just saying. Could you expand this point? At this point I feel uneasy about showing you that you don't know what you're talking about. Apologies, I was unaware that the movement was explicitly anti-feminist. It had always been sold to me (anecdotal, I know!) as a pragmatic movement focused on issues sans ideology. you're going to inevitably come to realization that without opposing feminism you're not going to do much. I'm still not sure why this is true. Perhaps…

Some MRAs are anti-feminist. I obviously disagree with that. I'd also point out the ridiculousness of telling someone who opposes prescriptive gender roles that they're not very manly. And, finally, my logic has been flawless - you're the one who took until here to come up with a reason a feminist can't be an.MRA.

You still haven't given a single reason as to why that's true.

I don't understand what your link has to do with anything. Sorry I forgot to add "unfair sentencing discrepancies" to my list, I guess? I was a "disposable man" myself -- worked two of the ten most dangerous jobs in America (roofer, currently doing that between classes, actually, and fisherman). Still doesn't have shit to do with shit. As far as I can tell, your contribution to the MRM currently consists of: trying to get someone not to contribute to the movement. You really suck at this.

1.) I don't need feminism to get laid -- I have a fiancee who didn't really care about feminism until after we'd been together for a while. 2.) I'm not sure why I would drop my feminism label. I believe lots of feminist things. It's who I am. I don't see any reason why I should lie and say I'm not one. 3.) You still haven't told me why I can't both label myself a feminist and help men's issues. 4.) You also haven't given any reason why being a feminist would get in the way of any of the causes I…

I absolutely believe I can. Feminists laid the ground work in a lot of gender theory that's still useful in dealing with issues men face. For example, Judith Butler came up with the notion of gender performativity in her book Gender Trouble. To sum it up, it's basically focused on how prescriptive gender roles are perpetuated by their enactment (very roughly, "I should do this masculine thing because I am a man and I saw this other man do it which means it's masculine" on a very broad scale). It…

I'm not sure I really understand your perspective. If I agree with most of what the MRM wants to work on (e.g. circumcision, male suicide, workplace safety, custody rights) why does it care if I'm also a feminist? Why can't I understand what would be productive for the movement?

1.) I never claimed I wasn't a feminist. 2.) I support MRA issues while I'm in feminist spaces -- y'know, opposing male circumcision, unfair custody practices, that kind of thing. I'm never going to support you, CrossHook, or the kind of thinking your represent. Because you're a shit head. 3.) I only "defend feminist ideology" in this subreddit when it's solely an issue of misinformation (e.g. This response to u/5th_Law_of_Robotics -- I thought the ensuing conversation with /u/YetAnotherCommento…

I understand what you mean and I agree with you. That said, I'm not sure what you mean by "more progressive" since the majority here is not gender-conservative at all. That was definitely poor word choice - perhaps "less reactionary" sans its specific political meaning (e.g., less "look what the feminists did!" and more "this is what we should do!"). I've actually already read your article on not-real-men vs. feminization on /r/masculism. It was a good read, though I'd maintain that the truth lies between the poles - i.e., not-real-men and feminization both occur. If the tools are inadequate, I suggest modifying the avaliable tools or making new ones. Absolutely. That's why I'm inclined to support a men's rights movement yet conflicted about supporting this men's rights movement, if you see what I mean. The requirement to modify a tool does …

I agree the bitterness here can be overpowering and sometimes I need a break from it, but it exists for a reason. My issue isn't needing a break from it or getting offended on this sub. It's that the amount of hostility and bitterness allowed to thrive on this sub is itself counterproductive. I've written before on how feminism is actually the lens that allows me to see most clearly the injustices of gender roles and the ways they're enforced upon men. Reading theory (and I mean academic theory,…

It's because [feminists] don't really say men as people. My objection stands. Turns out men can be feminists.

That's really just not true. I'm a man and a feminist and hardly consider men to be a monolithic stereotype. I'm very much opposed to both the phrases "man up" and "grow some balls." I wish you (and many others on this sub) would qualify your statements, e.g., "[Radfems] are literally unprepared to deal with them as individuals." I mean, even that isn't entirely true (you may want to check the entry on Radical Feminism on wikipedia) but it's at least closer to the truth. And then you wouldn't be…

I considered it an effective homage - this poster effectively works with the original rather than in opposition to it. And you're right: we shouldn't have to make a poster about it, but I think it's an effective method of disseminating the message. Brevity is huge in getting people to listen.
/r/MensRights26/03/13 02:58 PM

The whole point if that poster is that men are equally capable in that role. That's exactly the message that needs to be sent and received by society at large to resolve injustices in custody hearings.

Never say never but it's generally not great. If you do, you're better off aiming the joke at the rapist, not the victim. The reason rape jokes are problematic has best been explained to me by comparing them to racist jokes. Sure, you know you're joking, and your good friends know you're joking, but that new guy who just started hanging around? He's got no clue. He'll probably assume you're just being funny. Then again, he might be a racist taking it as a cue that your group is welcome to racist…

If you want to skip step two, I'll sum it up here: Encourage good behavior among your peers and discourage bad behavior (e.g. Your friends says something like "She's such a skank, she deserves to get raped" and you go "Hey guys, that's not really cool, not even to joke about"). 4.) Cost is the same as risk as far as insurance companies are concerned. Money is the only real question they ask.
/r/MensRights13/03/13 11:51 PM

Are you that thick? It's absolutely not. Let's pause for a second here and math with entirely hypothetical numbers, where men drive 50 miles/day with 1 accident/25 miles and women drive 1 mile/day and have 1 accident/mile. Women would have one accident every day while men would have two. Even though women would have more accidents/mile, they would cost insurance companies half as much as men.
/r/MensRights13/03/13 10:46 PM

Not saying men should pay more, but why is accidents per mile more relevant than total likelihood to be in an accident? The latter is what costs the insurance company money.

You have a decent point but if you're actually looking to change minds you should probably drop the snark. Readers who already agree with you will be all "fuck yeah!" but you're only going to alienate people on the fence.

If I'm reading the excerpt correctly, it would appear that the 10-15% number comes from men already questioning their paternity to avoid paying child support. I'm not at home so I don't have access to it at the moment, but I saw and saved a study yesterday that found there was no correlation between how provocatively a woman was dressed and rape. Your first study is for boys in Israel. Do I need to explain why that may not be relevant in the U.S.? The second study is about student perception and simply states that there is previous literature proving its claim that women teachers favor female students and that men favor male students. I am curious about the third study. It seems to be onto something but just what isn't clear: is it actually a bias against boys? That's definitely a factor. I just got accepted to a PhD program (English) and my starting salary when I finish another six years of school is barely above what I would be making if I'd spent ten years working in a trade. Dealing with racial privilege is a major focus of contemporary feminism called intersectionality. To sum it up, it recognizes a major failing of second-wave feminism: it focused on middle to upper class white women. This is shifting so that more work can be done to assist other oppressed groups while acknowledging that many feminists still benefit from white and class privilege.

Maybe, but many things aren't really related. Prime example? Circumcision. Yes, it's bad. I'm absolutely opposed to it and won't be circumcising my child; however, to equate circumcision with FGM is absurd. The latter typically involves cutting off the clitoris and frequently involves sewing the vagina shut (to be torn open by her husband on their wedding night). My dick's been cut but still works fine. The same is not true for FGM. Pretending they're equivalent is absurd. That's the kind of der…

You're allowed to discuss whatever you want but if you use hate speech you should expect to be labeled as a hate group. Edit to add: I don't think most MRAs use hate speech, for the record. I do think there's a rotten element in here that the movement should be distancing itself from.

They weren't upset by people discussing men's rights. They were upset by some users' rhetoric that extended past men's rights and into hate speech and advocation of violence. I am a feminist. I also (shock horror) believe in men's rights. I also happen to believe that decades of academic attention to gender studies provides the best tool box for rectifying men's issues. A lot of what's been posted is defending MRAs from the accusation, which is fine, but aso fails to answer the question. In short: language. It's definitely a problem. Some women are also complicit in rape culture, as unaware of it as men. Not everyone had heard the term, and of those that have not everyone cares. Here's an article written by a feminist on why not to play hard-to-get. That said, I'd be curious to see your study. Does "not yet" count as "no"? That still allows for the woman's agency. No still does mean no when she says it, even if she will later say yes. Some prefer to date for a bit before having sex.

Alright, let me spell this out. The view of male-as-provider comes from a time when patriarchy was far more literal, in which PartTimeBadman's explanation would have been unquestionably accurate. Although we're in a transitional phase (it's not like congress is 50% women), outdated gender roles are still present. As gender roles break down further, a man is no longer viewed as despicable for being "weak," it becomes okay to ask for help. It's still seen as shameful for a man to ask for help, mor…

You're going to have difficulty finding any of those hypocricies from a single source: you're often witnessing two sides of a debate (for example, relating to your third paragraph, women who oppose slut-shaming are typically sex-positive feminists who think sex is wonderful [even with men!] while the second group tend to be more conservative).

It seems clear to me that she's an outlier among feminists here: she's arguing against the feminists who want to end benevolent sexism and encourage women to take on equal tasks as men. For an example of the subtlety of rape culture, have a link: http://www.baltimorefishbowl.com/stories/baltimore-feminists-prank-victorias-secret-and-spark-an-internet-revolution/ A group of feminists first created panties in a three-pack. One says "yes" on it, another "maybe," and lastly "no." We can debate the merits of that idea separately.
