He is the best!!! I don’t think we’re allowed to link to photos here or I would share one of him

Honestly, my therapist says I’m triggered by loneliness, which for me is related to ambiguously losing my little sister to a meth addiction. I’ll be honest that many times I’ve tried to fill the hole she left with LVM, and it didn’t work out for plenty of reasons, etc. What I’ve been learning to do is be an only child when, for over 20 years, I had built in sidekick in my life. This might sound silly, but what has helped me the most is getting my cockatiel. I have always loved birds in general, …

Yessss! I do the same. And if they text me to confirm we’re still meeting up and I haven’t heard from them in days, I tell them, “oh sorry! When I didn’t hear from you, I assumed you weren’t interested and made other plans.”

The best thing my mom ever did for me was repeatedly tell me as a little girl, “don’t you ever depend on a man.”

I wish someone told me that the older guy in a band that I had a huge crush on and who texted me sometimes was a fucking creep and groomed me. At this point in my life, he’s 30 and I’m 26. I ended up going out with him several times over the last several years and only realized after joining this group that he groomed me. As a reference, the only reason I ever met him is because he would hang out at my best friend’s house all the time because he was best friends with her older brother. I just ha…

Can’t help but think about that post here the other day attacking Gabby and saying we were all treating her differently and how poorly it aged. Rest In Peace Gabby.

Why would you post this about the probable victim of a crime? Are you just looking to tear apart a missing woman? I’m not here for it at all.

My biggest pet peeve is when they list their height and then follow it immediate with, “since apparently that matters,” as if they aren’t also judging based on appearances. Like, I’m 6’0”, Chad, of course it matters.

I could never see the Harry/Hermione pairing until I played HP Lego on Switch, actually, and then it really clicked with me that the cliche would’ve naturally paired the two of them. Specifically, it’s the moments like this in Deathly Hallows and Ron’s jealousy at the thought of them together that made them a plausible pairing for me. As a side note, I always wondered what kind of person Malfoy might’ve been if he hadn’t been born, raised, and indoctrinated to be a POS. It’s probably my childhoo…

I am admittedly obsessed, and the way that I always look at it is that every case I listen to and learn about is another recognizable warning sign to put under my belt. I’d liken it to reading The Gift of Fear by Gavin de Becker. When I consume true crime content, I feel like I’m studying, like I’m doing my homework. I feel safer knowing what’s out there.

On a real note, I would call The Stranger Beside Me an American classic simply because Anne Rule’s point of view can never be beaten. She was a journalist at first and worked closely with the police department, and she was writing about Bundy the killer at the same time as she worked with Ted at the suicide hotline for a long time before ever having a clue they were one in the same. If you’re into true crime, it’s a must read.

When I was in high school and incredibly naive, I had a boyfriend for two years who was training for the Marine Corps and would make me go running with him – I am a jogger at best. I don’t concern myself with timed distance running because the best mile I’ve ever run was 7:15 in the sixth grade. Both of my parents are smokers and I was exposed to a lot of secondhand smoke - I cannot run like someone doing USMC conditioning. If I stopped running to walk for a breather, he’d run in circles around …

I love this sub and it has genuinely changed my life, but as someone with cPTSD and actively going to psychotherapy preparing for EMDR, #3 just makes me feel like shit and like I don’t belong here. I often feel like I don’t belong here because I’m mentally ill. Edit: While I’m at it, #6 is shitty too. Having grown up in a home with domestic violence and eventual divorce, breakups are inherently a thing I can’t just “suck it up” about. I hate this graphic.

I want to personally address someone who made the ignorant statement below: He was diagnosed as stage 3 four years ago. Stage 3 colorectal has a 5 year survivability of 75%, and that number mostly comes from cases in much older people. Right. I want you to know that my graduate advisor also passed away on February 2nd of this year with colorectal cancer at the age of 67, only two years after his initial diagnosis. I guess that must have been due to some anti-science blithering he was doing in se…

This might be better as its own post, but, out of curiosity, how has everyone else been doing since COVID-19 turned the world upside down? This tweet really hit home for me because I myself have struggled with balancing how I want to be treated by a partner with the implications of a global pandemic. In fact, I ended my relationship with a man I considered a HVM; we live ~3.5 miles away from each other, and the fact that we only spent 5 days together between March and July was an insult to my pr…

One time I caught another TA in my department on Bumble. I knew he shouldn’t be on there because I’d been interested in him, and after asking around learned he was dating another TA and had been for a while. I would’ve ratted on him regardless, but I SUPER ratted on him because this woman was and is and always will be way too fucking cool to be treated that way by anyone, least of all someone who claims to love her – she’s gone on two voyages in Antarctica for months at a time doing research for…

This is so so so long, so if you do read all of it, I have the upmost admiration and gratefulness of you. I can’t help but leap at the chance for an unbiased opinion of the details. No worries at all! But yeah, absolutely — up until the pandemic began, we were slowly building a life together and daydreamed all the time about when we’d have our own place in Houston together. We immediately clicked because we’re both in academia. I’m about to start year three of five in my PhD program and teaching…

From my POV it’s like his mom needs him to need her. I left this relationship feeling sorry for him that, with wealth I’ve never had access to, his parents have failed him so masterfully in raising him to be independent. I could be compensating or sticking up for him, but my family was fucked all the way up and still I think they’re weird as shit.

Definitely a new-to-me kind of breakup. It’s hard when you love someone yet see the terror ahead, but I’ve dodged a bullet. I even told him that he should let his mother choose his wife and then try to learn and love that woman because it would be easier for him LMAO

Omfg and when I shared my worries about specifically this with him he actually said, “I don’t think that’d be anything to worry about.” Like, I cannot imagine the mid-life crisis he’s going to have.

I’m actually so, so excited lately because my stress over the situation prompted me to check in with my EMDR therapist about where I was on her waiting list, and someone had canceled an hour or so earlier. In a way I’m thankful they put me through their bullshit because I got so lucky to have emailed her when I did after 8 months on the list haha. It has been a long, long journey, but I’ve read the books and am doing the work. It’ll all pay off! Thanks again! 💕

Thank you for saying this to me as I really needed to hear it. I grew up in an abusive home, so dating has been rough for me in general. It’s hard for me to see sometimes that just because it’s the best I’ve ever had still doesn’t mean it’s the best I could have. It’s why I joined and love this sub so much!

So he might not have been an LVM but he is def not an HVM. I needed to hear that so badly. Sometimes the gray areas are incredibly tough for me to navigate. Thank you so much!

This is so, so validating in every way. Like, I might have dated an only child in the past, but obviously if I did it doesn’t stick out and their parents must have been reasonable.

Interacting with her gave me this, like, truly horrifying premonition that if children ended up being in our future, she would view them as her grandchildren, not my actual children. I’m not sure if you have children but am curious if that sentiment rings any bells for you haha

To be honest, I’ve not much expected him to because of his current situation. To put it concisely, Most of our differences take root in my parents having been blue collar (a car wash mechanic and a waitress) while he’s had a very white collar life with his parents (a lawyer and a nurse-turned-SAHM). His parents pay for all of his graduate tuition, and he lives at home to save money. Meanwhile, I’ve essentially been on my own since I started college. That’s all to say that when I’ve pushed the is…

Maybe I’m biased since I’m an academic, but this is a red flag if I’ve ever seen one. As someone pursuing a doctoral degree in atmospheric science, if my boyfriend, who is seeking his PhD in philosophy, ever asked this of me, it would be the last thing he would ever ask me. Full stop. I’ve only just secured my candidacy but can already say beyond a shadow of a doubt that there are far, far too many sleepless nights, tears, grueling hours of hard work, etc., for me to ever attribute my eventual d…

Yep! I know for a fact my ex told everyone I “tried suicide,” as if trying to kill oneself is an appetizer worth sampling, when really I was experiencing extreme side effects from the birth control implant I got to ease his anxiety about an unplanned pregnancy. He simultaneously daydreamed with me about our hypothetical first born down to what we might name her and what she could look like only to tell me later he’d been feeling impulsive when we had that conversation. That was two years ago, an…

I’ve noticed this too. At first on Twitter I thought they were funny as far as bad dates on the extreme end of things, but it’s really become this entire, “y’all the bar is on the floor,” trope that’s so normalized I even started to view my negative dating experiences that way. Like, ha ha, this fucking loser just made an absolute idiot out of me, how quirky and ~relatable~ ha ha. Some of these women are (I think) trolling, but the amount that are both (a) serious and (b) believable is alarming.…
