I think in the past many people felt like they HAD to have a kid, due to strong social conditioning. Nowadays, I think people are more open to other ways of living that may not include a child. I think child rearing has become difficult for many because extended families are not as close as they once were and as they say, it takes a village to raise a child. Many might be lacking the support they would need.

I think it's harmful to some, yeah. Especially to those with self control issues. It's like junk food. Instead of consuming in moderation for an occasional treat, some become obsessive and they spend hours and hours trawling the net for something to get off to. People can definitely change in some aspects; their habits, body, interests, communication skills, maturity, productivity efforts etc. But I think there are some facets that are difficult to change because they are more intrinsically possessed. Someone's empathy skills for one; I think you've either got it or you don't.

We're an odd mix of obsessed and repressed. I think living in a sexually repressed society would be way more annoying. You'd want to flog yourself with a metal chain after having a wank. Sex shouldn't be treated as some shameful thing. I sometimes question some of the popular depictions these days, but I think that's more of a matter of personal taste. To each their own, but I have wondered how it works long term. You have limited energy and if you are spreading it out amongst several people, I feel like it would hinder true closeness and connection. I want to give 100% to the person I love. Not 25% or 48%.
