I appreciate your point of view and you may well be right, I suspect this comes down to world view / value system, also maybe definition of friendship. My values are that I will look out for anyone, even those who hurt me. I wouldn't describe myself as a Christian but the outlook is similar. The idea of people having to "deserve" or "earn" respect I see as strange and it doesn't sit right with me, but I have seen that angle a lot, especially from men. I know what you're saying and why, but I'm hopeful of remaining friends with my ex and don't think there's anything wrong with that. Every situation is different.
