I'm British and I just watched the interview. I live in a small town in Scotland where people say stuff like this all the time - from "mrs" to "mister", to other nicknames like "pet" and "love". Here it's just colloquial language that isn't meant to have any offensive meaning. It's like saying "mate". Although it obviously depends on the context of the situation. That's random. What is the job anyway, just office work? I know in Britain some jobs have an exception under the Equality Act that allow only women (or only men) to apply to a certain job. In some cases you can see where they are coming from, such as if a woman needs a full time personal carer she'd probably be more comfortable with a female carer rather than a male one. But this one is pretty unnecessary.

There's not really any other option. If you say something snarky, it could lead to them replying to only the snarky comment and that'll just derail the discussion even more. I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought that then! lol

The way to work around this is just to tell them it's not the issue at hand and acknowledge that while it is a problem, it's not the one you're discussing at the moment. Also best to stay calm and collected, anger never really helps.
