A few years ago, Sia’s song Unstoppable was used on millions of videos showing girl power, women are strong, they can do anything etc. It’s actually about alcoholism; the title describes how she felt after drinking too much and causing mayhem. “I’m a Porsche with no brakes!”

Some of this beggars belief, such as the section on male vs. female suicide rates. Apparently men are more “successful” at it because they use more lethal methods, but that’s less important than women making more attempts. The author is apparently blind to what those stats actually tell us. Is The Atlantic using AI editors now?

I don’t know about Prowse, but Alec Guinness negotiated 2.25% of gross profits and made $7 million (1977 dollars) from the initial theatre run. With the re-runs, merch, TV rights etc. he made an estimated $100 million.

Dress it up however you like, you're still advocating for Islam. Europe is not perfect, but all its countries are still better than any Islamic country. Why else are people always leaving those countries to come to Europe, or trying to? Besides: men's rights do not have to come at the expense of women's rights.

If you say anything, then it's the patriarchy, men trying to control women, yada yada ... but I don't want to control women. It would be better all round if they had more self-control in the first place, it seems to me. Recognise that hypergamous monkey-branching is a relic of prehistoric times when women had to ally themselves to the "big man" for their safety and the safety of their children. You don't have to do that any more, ladies, at least in the West: the world has your back.

Because that is Feminism today. It’s not enough to reduce gender-based discrimination and equality: so much of that has already been achieved, yet women are not happy, so now it’s about hurting men.

I don’t think this a “left / right” problem. It’s happening everywhere, not just in the “West”.

Meanwhile, the NY Times is publishing pieces with titles like Men, Where Have You Gone? Please Come Back. Currently, men have responsibilities without the associated rights, and women wonder why men are withdrawing from the whole relationship game?
/r/MensRights25/06/25 09:02 AM
2

That’s a false dichotomy. Of course men want healthy relationships with real women. The point is that more and more men aren’t getting those healthy relationships. The stats from online dating clearly show that the majority of women don’t want the majority of men, they’re all chasing the same minority of men they deem sufficiently rich and handsome.

For folks outside Denmark - the dates vs. grades don't line up with other countries. Compulsory "Primary" education includes ages up to 15-16. In other countries, that's halfway through High School. In the UK this would be roughly GCE Ordinary Level ("O-Level"). It's enough education to go on to a trade apprenticeship or a technical / vocational school, but not for university. So to say these men have "no education" is possibly a translation error.

Andrew Tate represents a 14-year-old’s idea of masculinity. His whole schtick is juvenile. I wouldn’t point to a single guy, except maybe in fiction, where things are exaggerated. Jack Ryan from Tom Clancy’s books is interesting but even he has flaws.

Andrew Tate is a shit, to be blunt. His idea of “men’s rights” involves actual harm to women. He’s no role model, and it’s not right to lump others in with him.

Swift is a feminist but I haven’t seen her going anything like as hardline misandrist as Lively seems to be doing. Starting a lawsuit a year after the movie was completed looks like some kind of damage control for the movie’s failure at the box office. I have no trouble imagining Baldoni getting too edgy and “boy’s club” on set, Lively didn’t come out smelling of roses either. She should save her money for her kids.

I'm assuming you're looking at the NY Times website in a modern browser like Firefox or Chrome. To the right of the address in the bar at the top, there should be a little "page" icon for Reader View or Reader Mode. This page talks about it for Chrome, with pictures. It doesn't always work, and some sites are trying ways to defeat that, so no guarantees.

None of this is a reason to vote for Trump. He did nothing substantial for men in his term in office, and I see nothing to suggest a second term would be any better. Presidential campaign promises don’t translate to what happens after the election, since Congress is where laws get made.

I’m not really interested or qualified to make moral judgments, more interested in why people want whatever they want. A knowledge of history helps: before the modern era of antibiotics and contraception, a “high body count” woman had a higher chance of having STDs or having children (or being pregnant) by other men. This is why virgins were prized and fathers were protective of their daughters. It’s not fair and attitudes haven’t caught up with modern medicine, but at the same time there are st…

I recently watched the first season of Gemma’s show Funny Woman. It has some social commentary about women in the 1960s, and the other minority issues of the day, but not too much. IRL Gemma swears like a sailor and was born with more fingers than average, which helps make her all right in my book.

Anyone remember the movie G.I. Jane? If I saw it, it was a long time ago. IIRC Jane (Demi Moore) was given the exemption, but cut off all her hair anyway since she didn't want to train any less hard than the men. I don't know how true to life this is, but it does make me wonder whether women themselves are happy with exemptions in the military.

No-one is saying either of them are “trans”. I don’t know why that word keeps getting thrown in. The “trans” in “transgender” is short for “transitioning”, and there is no transitioning going on here. However, one of them is male at a genetic level (XY vs XX chromosomes) from birth, and as a consequence of that has higher testosterone levels, more muscle mass, and is generally stronger than a genetic woman. This is not made up, and there is no bias or agenda in stating that as fact.

“Insecure” is not a binary, yes/no question. There’s always going to be a degree of insecurity in a person, because life is insecure. The totally “secure” man has to be blind to what’s happening in this world today, ignorant of trends and headlines. I’m also not convinced that “traditional” or “50-50” are the only two options, either. Those are essentially economic options, where “traditional” means that the man can afford to pay for everything and have a wife who stays at home with the kids. Th…

For years there was this chronic trope in media that sex is life-changing of itself, just the act alone, but it’s not really. If you were stupid or nasty before it, you’ll be just as stupid or nasty after it. I think things started changing with the American Pie movies, weirdly. Spoiler: the main character spends most of two movies trying to sleep with the wrong people, before realising that the right person was in front of him all along.

Yeah, you don't have to lecture me on how "creepy" is subjective and linked to money: I know. However, Andy (in the movie) is not conventionally handsome and so would be at a higher risk of being called a creep. It's not fair, but it's what happens. If he was a rich, handsome movie star like Leonardo di Caprio, it would be different for him. His other options didn't exactly look good, either. (The alcoholic or the nymphomaniac?) If he didn't think he was settling, then he wasn't settling.

I liked that movie - it was quite sensitive and understanding of how a man can end up in that situation. Would you rather he chased younger woman, like his "friends" tried to get him to do? That could have been creepy. I suggest you watch Lost In Translation and try to understand what's happening and (more importantly) not happening in that movie.

I understand the Harvey Weinstein effect - how women felt pressure to not talk about him for the sake of their careers. In retrospect, though, Weinstein could have got stopped decades ago, if what he was doing had been made widely known. There's also the wish to move on, to not be defined by what a man did to you. On the other hand, "believe all women"* is clearly a step too far, when we have seen the effect of false accusations on the likes of Spacey or Johnny Depp. Reliving trauma in court is …

From outside the USA it just seems weird, how much infant circumcision goes on in the USA. It appears to be some conflation of religious ideas getting some post-hoc justification e.g. the bogus "cleanliness" argument or something about lasting longer in bed. OK, and what’s the cure for inexperience? Someone’s going to have to bite the bullet and help those guys get the experience. Or would you rather all chase the same small pool of guys who get all the experience… and who have all the options? That’s how women end up single at 33, asking “where did all the good men go?” They were there all the time, you just rejected them because they lacked experience.

I don't get this `'entitled" language. It makes the whole sex thing sound one-sided and transactional. Sex is part of a normal, healthy adult relationship. Lack of it can break a relationship from the man's POV. That doesn't mean "men only want sex", but it is important to a relationship.
/r/PurplePillDebate21/08/23 12:49 PM

"Desperate" is loaded language, it makes it look like the OP is trying to belittle men. What I (M) will say is that sex is important to men - maybe more so than for women - and there is a physiological side to it too. DIY sex can scratch some of that itch, but not all of it. The way it appears to me, from a man's POV, sex or lack of can make or break a relationship. I would go so far as to say that you don't really know a man until after sex. Before sex, the hormones are warping his perceptions …

I wouldn’t say that men “hate” single mothers, but when I see a mother of small children, it raises some questions about her intelligence and lifestyle choices. It’s possible that she’s a widow, but it’s far more likely that she slept with the wrong guy(s) without protection. Having children is a life-changing event, so to do it without being absolutely certain of the guy speaks to poor impulse control. The odds of a genuine relationship failure increase over time as the kids get older.

As a teenager in school, I (M) was basically "doing it wrong", because I didn't know enough about girls and had no one around to advise me. Specifically, I didn't know that teenage girls weren't interested in guys their same age or (as in my case) slightly younger, and so never dated within the same school grade. The girls in my final year (at a new school for me) already had boyfriends much older than them, with jobs and cars, but they were the only girls I ever saw regularly, so ... crickets. …

Before you have sex with a guy at least once, you don’t know him properly. Our male hormones warp our tiny little minds, and we don’t see clearly until afterwards. It’s called post-nut clarity or refractory period. So if guys don’t stick around after sex, it’s because they just got a clearer vision of you, and didn’t like what they saw. If that keeps happening to you, it’s not only about the guys. I agree that men are not entitled to sex, and I don’t condone any sort of coercion or violence, but…

It’s a chicken-and-egg situation. Back in the “good old days” when wives stayed at home, the economy of the country (wherever you are) reflected that reality. Men were paid salaries that could support a stay-at-home wife. Now that most women work, the economy reflects that; with two salaries becoming the norm, the economy expanded and prices adjusted accordingly. So a single salary now means a below-average household income. Two salaries mean that childcare is a growth industry.

I didn’t say they weren’t, did I? They could suppress their libidos chemically … but they won’t, because why the hell should they? What’s in it for them? To make people like you happy?

Firstly, talking about men as a collective makes you look clueless about men. There are wide variations in attitudes and libidos. If you acknowledge that, then you’ll recognise that the men who might (in your opinion) “need” such supplements would be the ones most likely to laugh at the idea and tell you where to stick it. (And if you have some notion that some men could “police” “those men” on such things, that’s really not how men work.)
/r/PurplePillDebate10/03/23 05:55 PM

How else do you suggest curbing men’s libidos? It’s hormonal, not something men can control. Men can and should control their actions, of course, but that’s a totally different area.

Oh, here we go again with the "phobias", as if having any kind of preference is an expression of fear. If you think Islam is bullcrap, you're "Islamophobic", if you don't want an obese partner you're "fatphobic". I'm assuming this is about dating & romantic relationships, since you're posting on this sub. Why do we have relationships at all? What's the benefit? Have we lost the idea that two people can actually be good for each other? Build each other up, make each other better people? Simple ex…

There's more than one definition of "feminism". I don't know if we're still in the fourth wave, or whether the fifth wave has started yet. But I would definitely stop short of lumping all "feminists" together. I sometimes wonder if they even talk to each other.

It’s an answer to the OP’s question, about why weddings mean so much to the bride in particular. It’s not specifically a Western thing: ever seen an Indian wedding? The last wedding I personally went to was in Portugal, and it was a huge deal. The bride went around at the reception, collecting envelopes full of cash from everyone.

Let me get this straight: you are confused because women behave in contradictory ways, and can completely change their minds about their relationships over time? You’ll figure it out eventually. The wedding is a performance, a display of conspicuous consumption. It doesn’t tell you much about the relationship at all.

I'm a guy and so I'm not really going to know, but it does seem to be a bit arbitrary. I remember Emma Watson getting annoyed at the media about it when she was 29 - video here - though she doesn't use the W-word. I honestly think this all mostly comes from women, and not from men, who generally aren't as hung up on such things. There are apparent exceptions such as Leonardo diCaprio, but no-one really thinks he's justified in his bias for younger women.

Funny how you interpreted what I wrote as being about one-sided “responsibility”. Do you think it’s the “responsibility” of men to fix “broken” women? Or is that only men can be “broken”, never women? Either way, if you reject people as “broken”, things will only get worse.

I'd sit you all down and make you watch the movie Grease. Do you really think it's enough to tell men to change, then sit back and just expect it to happen? You list a bunch of negative traits that men should lose, but where are the positive traits that should take their place? Keep telling men they're bad, then act surprised when they go "OK, I'm bad" and walk away? In my opinion, women need to get their hands dirty and help, not just sit back and snipe at men from the sidelines. Understand tha…

The part that annoys me the most is the claim of entitlement to sex on the part of men. I've definitely seen that in a few cases, but it gets blown out of all proportion by the media and misandrist crowd. To feel genuinely entitled to sex would be dumb, frankly, and would pretty much guarantee that you're not going to get any and you would deserve the label. If it was just about sex, well, you could pay for it. But most men don't, so that tells me there's something going on that's being left uns…

Put in the effort to learn some social skills Can you learn social skills on your own? Or is it a vicious circle, where you can’t learn social skills if you get rejected straight away? NB: These are general questions: I’m not asking for myself, but I’m curious how younger people handle this. Telling someone to “work on yourself” seems to be this generation’s version of “go away”.

Of course everyone is “allowed to” change standards etc. Nothing would prevent that. The point is that there are consequences to doing that. Dating websites are bursting at the seams with women who had their fun during their twenties, maybe with kids attached, then hit their thirties and decide they want to get serious. “No more games”, don’t want no scrubs, the guy has got to be tall, handsome and rich, yet enough of a gamma to be happy paying to raise kids he didn’t father. Sarcasm? If so, you seem to be unaware that physical violence by women towards men is not some rare exception, nor that shaming and emotional cruelty by women is a factor in the much-higher suicide rates among men. I used the word "fatal" deliberately.
/r/MensRights15/12/20 04:33 PM

You seem to be confused about quantity vs. quality of violence: Quantity: yes, men are responsible for more violence overall, as you say. Quality: women can inflict just as much damage on men as men can inflict on women. Harmful violence is not limited to the physical realm: mental / emotional violence can be fatal to men and women alike.

I think it’s fine if you’re rich with resources to basically give away. You need to think ahead: divorce is a likely outcome, after which the guy could end up completely out of the picture with no visitation rights - no biological connection - but still on the hook financially.

It's a sign of immaturity - that simple, I think. Real adults face situations, and deal with people as they would like to be dealt with. When it happened to me, I didn't get it - was I being told that I was some kind of monster, too scary to talk to directly? Did she think I was potentially violent, when (as far as I know) I did nothing at all to give that impression? I know women say they have to defensive because of mail violence, but does that even apply to electronic communication too?

Personally, I value emotional engagement... but usually after sex. Before sex, let’s just say that other feelings are higher on the list of priorities. When women say “men aren’t into emotion”, it sounds like they don’t get how powerful hormones can be at times.

I don’t want to be responsible for kids, financially or otherwise, which means I would be less likely to date a single mother (1M) with young kids. Not a hard “disqualify”, but the more independent the better. A 1M might say something like “you don’t have any responsibility towards my kids”, but I’m not that naive. Expenses grow to meet or exceed income; plus, I am only human and might get emotionally involved regardless.

Poe's Law in effect: it's impossible to tell whether or not this is sarcasm, because people have seriously said such dumb things in the past. If serious, the author doesn't see men as individual human beings, but rather as some kind of group where guilt is shared by association. Or to put it another way, she knows nothing about actual men, who are much more varied and who don't tend to associate in that kind of way. We don't naturally form mutual support groups like women tend to do. In the unli…

I don't really see this as a "moral" issue at all. If your goal is to have a lot of sex, and you have a method that guarantees a lot of sex, then go for it, and I wouldn't dare to judge you. But some of us are thinking beyond the sex. We've been there, done that, and it's not enough. Remember what Groucho Marx said about clubs?
