The judge has the power to "impute" your income based on past earnings and future earnings "potential". If the market crashes or you lose your job, you must apply to the court for a variance (which may or may not be granted). Failure to pay is considered contempt of court (and a judge can actually give you jail time for contempt).

My data is from: http://www.natsem.canberra.edu.au/storage/dp1.pdf Which clearly states that: 93% of men pay their HECS debt by age 65 versus only 67% of women. For Austudy, the numbers are 89% for men and 54% for women. The difference is due to lower income AND lower labor force participation. And yes, women bitch all the time about their bad choices. I'll be waiting for my apology (but I won't hold my breath)…

Already happening. In Australia, student loan payments can be deferred if you make less than the average wage. Guess which gender takes the most time out of the workforce (or works part time) and will never repay their debt? The US is discussing adopting the Australian system.

It's a small school - this is faculty in all disciplines. I have no problem with free choice but men make up almost 50% of all PhDs. According to the binomial distribution, there is less than a 0.1% chance of 13 females being selected from 14 trials assuming everything else is equal. Such a trend does not concern you?

I'm 30 years out of school but thanks for the comment. One can only hope that the market (i.e. men voting with their feet) will correct the imbalances over time but, as Keynes stated, "...in the long run we are all dead".

I recommend reading Elizabeth Warren's Two Income Trap (or watching on YouTube). In 1970, a guy could support a family and save almost 10% of his income. Now with two incomes you can barely break even (in fact Warren says you go negative). Children bring financial stress because of childcare costs or the lost income of a stay at home parent. It is virtually impossible for the average guy to support a family on one income. This increases marital dissatisfaction.
