1	The demonisation of boys in our school system. This photo was taken by a young man in an Australian school. I'm saying the men who end up logging or drilling for oil made choices that were less than optimal for their well being in just the same way that the women who decided to be stay at home moms or hairdressers did. But the argument that women make less because they voluntarily made decisions that led to them is predicated on blaming the individual for their decision. The logic behind it is this: Every person has autonomy over their own career path. Many individual women have made decisions that led to them being in careers that were less than their optimal earning potential. Even so, no one is holding a gun to men's heads and forcing them to be lumberjacks or fishermen or long haul truckers, going in to career paths that will put them statistically at risk of death. "Incentive" refers to the idea of a reward great enough to change a population's behavior; if individual behaviors aren't being changed by an offered incentive, though, individuals must not believe this reward is an incentive, a just reward for changing behavior. Should I look at the rates of black people presiding over Fortune 500 companies and conclude black people are just inherently less interested in being CEOs, too? My point is that there still must be clear social disincentives preventing women from taking serious interest in STEM fields, at some point in their educational backgrounds, or else the benefits you mentioned would be injecting significant numbers of women into these fields -- and they're clearly not. My point, by the way, is not to be a knee-jerk feminist about this. The wage gap, etc., doesn't send me whatsoever.
