If you're still working on self esteem/self worth issues, that's okay - these things take time. If you're not comfortable framing things in terms of "I deserve," it can also work and you can get similar outcomes thinking in terms of not wanting to have anyone in your life who makes it worse. If you have trouble valuing yourself as you are, you can frame it in terms of your goals (which I am hoping you do value) - is this person/action getting in the way of those, or helping me on that path? Of c…

The books are still pretty sexist, and there’s a good amount of rape written in a pretty fetishistic way. Not to mention sexualization of literal children. They were entertaining to read and some of the writing was good, but GRRM shouldn’t be getting as much praise as he does for being like progressive or whatever, because the misogyny is still apparent.

Very rarely will you find a man in grad school willing to put enough time and effort into a relationship. The PhD is usually all-consuming, and you'll always be at least second place to his advisor/research. If by some miracle you find one who gives you the attention you deserve, be aware he might ask you to move with him for a job afterward (if that), because job markets for PhDs are often niche and localized if industrial, or hard to come by at all if academic. Generally not worth it to take t…

It’s been mentioned here before as a red flag with men, but I think being hung up on or talking a lot about exes applies as a red flag here, too. In my experience it’s more common to be friends with exes, and I’ve seen a few cases of women cheating on their current partners with said exes. There might need to be a bit more nuance when figuring out how much of a red flag it is, because communities are smaller and it’s easier to come in contact, but I think the fixation on the ex as a red flag sti…

I think waiting can be a good idea if you're young, or still students. In that case the clock could reasonably start after graduation. Reasoning for this is that it's important to see how having actual jobs changes the dynamic (making money, more set hours, maybe not living with roommates anymore, in some cases not getting parents' money anymore), since it can bring out red flags that might not have been there before. Do not wait until after marriage to find out your husband is bad with money, o…

Don’t date someone just because he’s there and interested. If you’re not attracted to him and he doesn’t make your life better for being in it, dragging things on just for the affirmation of feeling wanted isn’t worth it, and even that will fade.

Living plants, or a well-maintained pet (clean litter box for cat, well-trained dog, etc). I think either shows an attention to detail and reliability. In addition to the bookshelf, I also look for art besides generic movie posters or old liquor bottles.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
