Totally agree. I was, however, very happy when signing up for SSS to see that you can be a conscientious objector and be put to work volunteering for America instead, doing stuff like conservation work, health care, caring for young or old, or education.

So do you consider yourself an MRM or an egalitarian?
/r/MensRights21/01/13 09:42 AM

Lets not stoop to that level.

Yeah I have begun to identify myself as both a feminist and an egalitarian, largely thanks to r/mensrights

Funny how /r/mensrights continously insults me and feminism as a whole, and then complains when feminists insult them and claim that insults are below them. EDIT: my bad. r/mensrights hasn't insulted me personally. I just feel insulted sometimes as a feminist.

You're wrong. I call out my fellow feminists when they men-bash. And I don't think the MRM and feminism are quite analogous and as such aren't subject to the same rules. You may simply tell me I'm wrong, but women suffer oppression in our society. As such the people with privileged identities (heterosexual, white, male, able-bodied, tall, etc. etc.) but not necessarily all of them, should check their privilege when talking about such issues. I don't think MRM bothers to check its privilege, and …

Those two things you just compared are not nearly the same thing. Groups deserve a space to discuss their own issues without being antagonized, and another space that they can be antagonized. I run an environmental group on campus and we have a FB page. I assure you if some asshole conservative joined the group solely to shut us down on everything, I would ask them to leave. I would invite them to join another group about discussing environmentalism vs. economic growth or whatever he/she wanted …

You did not call them irrational. You implied they are children who do not think. One can engage in criticism without outright insulting other people. Don't stoop to insults to win your arguments. It weakens your case.

I understand and to a degree agree with you that the ignoring of dissenting opinions within feminism is not the best practice, but please don't belittle other people just because you don't agree with what they do. We can handle dissenting opinions, because we are thinking adults No need to condescend.

Don't you ever get tired of using fallacies like loaded questions?

You personally are not the oppressor. The patriarchy is the oppressor. Men often feel attacked by feminist discourse because they personally feel like they are directly oppressing them of their own accord. This is not the case. We are part of a bigger system that oppresses women. Yes we all participate in the system, but since we're also products of the system we aren't all insensitive assholes or anything if we haven't yet realized that the system is unfair to certain groups.

...but /r/askfeminism exists. That space is there for you. Whether it has as many subscribers isn't their fault. Feminists made sure to create a space to engage. Remember when /r/conservative got invaded and shut everybody out? I'm not supporting their choice to do so whatsoever, but some groups that get constantly antagonized deserve a space to not be antagonized. They also should have a space where they can be antagonized. Feminists on reddit have created both of those spaces. So yes, they cen…

That's not inherently a bad thing. Groups that are oppressed are entitled to a space that is safe from dissenting people that are deemed oppressive and offensive. Feminists on reddit have also created a space for people to ask about feminism. Why are people still throwing a fit about this?

I would not consider this a victory over feminism at all. Feminists, myself included, would be happy to see something worded gender neutral like this. I say this because this subreddit seems to focus on bringing down women more than bringing up men. And this post didn't do that. So bravo!
/r/MensRights04/01/13 08:44 PM

Now this is the kind of thing the MRM should be fighting for. I was worried when I clicked on this post that it would be a victory over feminism, but I was pleasantly surprised.

Stop posing feminism as the evil that this subreddit is trying to squash! Feminists are most certainly in support of free contraception, including condoms. This should be a topic for the MRM to realize that they want the same thing, but instead r/mensrights poses feminism as the enemy yet again.

You're right, the two issues are different. But nonetheless, making jokes about socialized oppression reproduces said socialized oppression, albeit to a small degree. Everybody agrees that some jokes are just too far, so its just a matter of where to draw the line. You and I seem to draw it in a different place.

Your post is the exact reason I am not a huge fan of the MRM. I am a feminist, and I can be an MRA too, except people like you define MRM in opposition to feminism.

While that may be true, we need to acknowledge that the pages that get our upvotes are the ones that other people see when they come to r/mensrights, and if the top ten posts are just anti-feminism, that's not really what we're working towards and it successfully paints the MRM as anti-women, which is not what we want.

You can't peel the two apart. If you make a "joke" that openly bashes feminism, you are bashing feminism. If I make a joke that is blatantly racist, even if it's a joke, I'm still saying something's racist. I'm not a huge fan fan of the whole "chill out, it's a joke" argument. Jokes can burn too.

Not sure how you define a fact, but they tend to not include words like "almost every time." If it's not every time, it's not a fact. It's a trend. You said it yourself. Almost every time. That means that some of the time, something else happens. The possibility exists. oneiorosgrip may be entirely correct in her predictions. Your gender, my gender, our gender, whose ever it is is besides the point. People can generalize about whoever they want, it's still generalizing. I was not claiming, nor will I claim, that venting by females is rare or unusual. That was not my point. I just wanted to point out that you were making predictions about another person based mainly on one piece of knowledge about them: her gender. It may be very possible that you are indeed correct. She* I understand why she's saying what she's saying and totally get that OP should do what's best to protect himself. I just wanted to point out that she's generalizing based on gender, which she absolutely is. If you think that all women will act in a certain way simply because they are women, even if you're right, you are still generalizing based on gender.
/r/MensRights15/12/12 03:11 AM

It's the dynamics of how female humans operate in groups. I hope you agree that you basically just said that you are indeed generalizing based on her gender. I'm not even challenging your statement, just wishing for you to acknowledge what you're doing.

If you don't think our society encourages violence against women I'm not sure what rappers you're not listening to (double negative intended). "reached back like a pimp and I slapped the hoe" "I ain't got a problem with slappin' a bitch" I could go on and find more rap lyrics that explicitly glorify violence against women, but I have a paper to write and I've only allowed myself 5 minutes on reddit.

So you really believe that it is racist (and, the important implication here is that it's wrong) to fight for black people's rights and access to opportunity without also fighting for that for white people?
/r/MensRights08/12/12 04:17 AM

I don't know the whole story behind that, but it seems like it is. In addition, if the shooter openly said "you're all men, I hate men!" then even more so this would be true.

This story is absolutely a gendered issue. Do not even pretend like it's not. From this article: http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2012/dec/03/montreal-massacre-canadas-feminists-remember Lépine had previously been denied admission to the École Polytechnique and had been upset, it later transpired, about women working in positions traditionally occupied by men. I'd like to point out that this type of gender policing (calling guys fags for feeling emotions, in general discouraging men from feeling/showing emotions, discouraging men from doing anything at all deemed "unmany," etc. etc.) is absolutely something that feminists fight against. Ha no worries, I was being silly in my reply. And I'm used to it. r/mensrights tends to do that to people who don't agree with everybody else. Can't blame 'em though. And thanks. Real discussions about these issues are so much more important than the usual bickering that goes on without anyone really listening to dissenting opinions.
/r/MensRights16/11/12 04:38 AM
2

It's not that silly. Wrong maybe, but not silly. Last time I learned about suicide rates, men have higher rates because they have higher success rates. They're more likely to do methods that are violent like shooting themselves or jumping off a building, while women are more likely to do things like pills that don't work as well. Ya got a great point about men not having support for these issues. I totally think we should have support too.
/r/MensRights16/11/12 04:26 AM

You made the first claim. You go first. How does our society tell men we don't have any value?

This is a point that /r/mensrights seems to overlook frequently: Some women help reproduce the harmful aspects of the patriarchy just like some men do. (note the key words here: some. Not all men or all women can be lumped into any group) /r/mensrights seems not to believe it, but keep in mind that feminism is fighting the patriarchy, not fighting men. Simply being a woman does not make it so you're empowered and fully aware of (and, specifically, going against) social norms and gender roles. A …

Thanks for the story. I think I would argue that yes, everybody has their own free will, but societal pressures are a little harsher on females in our society. They absolutely exist for men too, but I think they're stricter and enforced more harshly on women and girls.
/r/MensRights15/11/12 08:10 PM
1

You're completely right that girls participate in this cycle too. This is why feminists are fighting against the patriarchy and not fighting men. Women absolutely contribute to their own objectivication, and feminists will be the first to admit this. I think you're thinking that feminists blame this problem specifically on men. I don't think they do. They (we) acknowledge that this problem stems from myriad sources and can hardly be attributed to any single source. Becuase the cause is so diffus…
/r/MensRights15/11/12 08:04 PM

Feminists don't deny supply and demand principles. They challenge the concept that our society pressures girls into feeling like they are valued by the attractiveness of their bodies as their main asset. Men, on the other hand, have other characteristics that are viewed more prominently than our looks. Girls' bodies are in the spotlight more than guys', so they are pressured to show it off more. No need to be so condescending by the way.
/r/MensRights15/11/12 07:23 AM
2

Ya kinda missed my point. I'm not saying that everybody should break every law and do whatever they want. I'm saying that people should not feel like they have to act a certain way simply because of their gender. If I want to do ballet even though I'm a guy, I shouldn't be called a fag. Same if I want to play with barbies. They're fucking toys, and yet god forbid a young boy choose to play with them. EDIT: I edited it, making it bold
/r/MensRights13/11/12 07:03 AM
3

I think your views of gender roles are restricting and cause people to think they should act one or another way solely based on their genitals. People are people who should do whatever the hell they want, regardless of what's in their pants. EDIT: spelling
/r/MensRights13/11/12 06:20 AM

Yeah I feel you. But equalists don't fight gender inequality, they fight air- ,water-, fire- and earthbenders, so that term might not be appropriate ( /r/thelastairbender )
/r/MensRights11/11/12 10:17 PM
6

It's not "masculinism," it's masculism. Just like it's not "femininism." I've been thinking more and more that I may be a gender egalitarian and not a feminist. Not because I don't believe in feminism, but because simply the word only representing one side seems, well, unequal.
/r/MensRights11/11/12 08:40 AM

That's a good point. I was just talking earlier today about how echo chambers are dangerous. I guess I think the people involved in any school of thought should be entitled to a safe space AND a space for criticism. Ideally they participate in both.
/r/MensRights11/11/12 08:22 AM

I wasn't trying to imply his post was an attack. Sorry if it came off that way. I was generalizing about how if they didn't police their subreddit, people would attack them. I don't think his post was an attack at all. It was pretty mild-tempered actually. And no, I wouldn't say that.
/r/MensRights11/11/12 08:20 AM

there is no need for censorship anywhere. Yes there is. If the mods and rules of this subreddit didn't keep radfems from coming in and just attacking all of you guys here, this subreddit would get really annoying and not be what it's intended to be. But, thanks to "censorship" as you call it (or guidelines as I would call it), a discussion can be focused and keep out things that aren't thought to be following the rules.

I agree with you, although OP's anger is totally valid. I think there are spaces that should be open to criticism and open dialogue, and there are spaces that should be considered "safe spaces" where groups get to discuss their thoughts and beliefs without having to explain and defend them to somebody who isn't on board. These are two very different groups with very different intentions. Cleary, /r/feminism considers itself a safe space, not a place for criticism. OP's right to be pissed off, bu…

The whole "if you wear revealing clothing, you deserved to get raped" mantra is fucking stupid. Men aren't robots guided by our penises. We have the will to not rape people. Using that as an excuse poses men as dogs who have no control over us and harms the Mens Rights Movement.

Why all the anti-feminism posts as opposed to the pro-men posts? THANK YOU. Lots of posts here set up MRM as in opposition to feminism, saying things like "This is what we're up against." You have a very good point. Quotas like that don't really do their intended goal. You have to go at it differently. The issue stems deeper than that. All along their lives, young girls are implicitly taught that this world is run by men and that they're not worthy of running it. If you talk to "the man in charge" he's typically just that, a man. And girls learn this. Look at movies. Men are portrayed as strong and in charge, while women and girls are portrayed (esp. in children's movies) as prin…

I see what you're saying, but I really just think that the men-hating feminists are just the ones that we hear. There are lots more who are egalitarians, but they're just loud and in your face, so we don't even ever find out that they're feminists. I really am thinking a lot though why we don't call it gender egalitarianism though. I've brought this up to a group of Gender and Sexuality Studies at my university. I'm curious to see people's thoughts. Thanks for your thoughts.

Of course the women have influences on people. I am not going to refute that whatsoever. But they aren't the ones who ultimately make the decisions (at least in this case in fortune 500 companies and the gov't) Yeah sure Michelle Obama has Barack's ear each night, but ultimately the decisions are Barack's. I agree with you about the status quo, but to ignore the gender issue is to support he status quo, because there is such a disproportionate amount of women in power as compared to their number…

What you called Modern Feminism is not feminism, that's radical feminism. There is a difference. Ok. I'd like to define feminism for me and the people who I associate myself with. Feminism: the belief that men and women are equal (but not necessarily the same) and should be treated as such Now of course there are men-hating feminists who don't seem to have this as their belief. There are extremes of any party. But those are just the extremists. The core of feminism is equality. What you're seein…

Don't let any one person speak for any ideology. I can quote you tons of American who were murderers, but that doesn't mean all Americans are murderers. Yes there are crazy feminists out there. But there are fare more feminists whose goals are reasonable and beneficial to everyone.
/r/MensRights17/10/12 09:02 PM

I don't think they do. I think this is a common misconception of feminism. Feminists aren't angry at men, they're angry at the oppressive patriarcy and everybody, no matter what gender, who contributes to it.
/r/MensRights17/10/12 08:49 PM
3

Feminists don't claim that men's issues don't exist. They totally acknowledge them and think they should be remediated. The key phrase you just used is radical feminism. There is sooo much feminism that is totally relatable, reasonable, and beneficial to everyone, but we only hear about and see the crazy, outlandish ones and assume that that's what feminism is.
/r/MensRights17/10/12 08:38 PM

I mean I'm not going to disagree with you in saying that a male shouldn't have to take care of a child that's not his if he does not wish to. In that situation, I'd say yeah. I think the gender inequality in divorces and child custody is messed up. I'd go ahead and say that a lot of feminists, as proponents of gender equality, for the most part would agree that this issue should be more equal.
/r/MensRights17/10/12 08:25 PM
6

I totally agree with your correction. Thank you for doing that. I think this point is very important. And I'm not claiming they're not the majority. But not all women are proponents of women's rights. That's what I'm trying to say. My apologies if I didn't make that clear.

People here seem to be assuming that every woman in America is an empowered feminist who is aware and pissed off by the inequity of power in our country. This is not the case. Women contribute to the sexist patriarchy we live in just like men do. This isn't to say they're at fault. But just being a woman does not and should not imply ideological beliefs and behavior.

This is an important thing that is not apparent in this thread: Women can also contribute to the hegemonic patriarchy power structure The word hegemonic is crucial here. It implies that the power structure has consent of its constituents. The majority of women in America are not feminists and as such do not shake things up.

Your statement is misinformed. According to feminists, women don't currently hold the power in our patriarchal system, and as such don't get to make all the choices. Even if they are in power, simply being a woman does not mean you don't contribute to the patriarchal power structure. According to your logic, people fighting for black rights think that black people are powerless, weak, and not in control. To say that a group of people is oppressed is not to say that they are unworthy, which is wh…
