While I agree with most of what you've said here, it's worth bearing in mind there are some specific forms of prejudice that trans women face that no other groups do. For example, trans women are expected by most people to dress or act more feminine than cis women as a way of proving their womanhood. Cis men don't experience this discrimination, so I think calling it transmisogyny makes sense. Otherwise though I completely agree! (but I'm also not trans)

That's such an interesting study! Do you happen to have a link for it? Don't worry about finding it if not though. It's interesting to compare that to trans people as well, in that trans people tend to have mental health problems such as depression, and that's probably because social acceptance of trans people is still similarly bad to what it was like for gay people. It's alright I guess. I don't really use Reddit much so this is pretty much my first experience of talking a lot in a subreddit and not just being a lurker. I'd been thinking a lot about how I've struggled with instances of misandry in my life and I didn't really know how to articulate that, but full on MRA types seem pretty extreme and misogynistic. It's been reassuring to find a subreddit that seems to focus on pushing for better rights for men without that being at the expense of women.

It's been interesting getting other people's perspectives on this because my impression was that most feminists had not made much effort to distinguish themselves from TERFs. In the UK TERFs are very eager to call themselves feminists at pretty much every opportunity, and receive very little backlash for doing so. I was also under the impression that most people are accepting of transphobia, or at least are happy to let it slide (again in the UK).

Trans men definitely face transphobia as well. TERFs treat them as confused women who have been tricked into transitioning to escape misogyny, and a lot of gay men think that gay trans men are trying to invade their spaces, or are trying to pressure gay men into dating them. But like you say, transphobia towards trans women appears to be much more of a focus in TERF circles and in the media in general.

The only people I see using these terms are TERFs saying that this is how trans people talk. I've never seen a trans person refer to anyone as "prostate owner". Usually when talking about issues that affect people who, as an example, have a prostate, people just say "cis men and trans women". Maybe I've missed times when trans people have used these terms, but I certainly don't think it's common practice.

My mum has been a radical feminist all her life and is now a TERF. She fought for women's rights but she is certainly guilty of being a misandrist as well, and I think that's part of why she's latched onto TERF rhetoric. The impression that I've got from reading people's responses is that almost all feminists in the US have rejected TERFs, whereas in the UK most media representation of feminism comes from TERFs, so a good portion of feminists have become TERFs here.

Agreed, movements should have to acknowledge their problematic sides. I think this should include gay/trans rights movements as well as feminism, although I do think even the most problematic LGBT+ people are less problematic than TERFs.

Agreed that hate is not the way to move forwards, but I think there's a big difference between TERFs hating trans women because they view them all as predators and trans women hating TERFs because TERFs consistently harass them online and in public life.

I think to say that a lot of the left are intolerant is an exaggeration. There are definitely some that are, but they are a minority whose voices get amplified by the internet. I mean, a lot of people see "sex" as what your chromosomes are, and chromosomes aren't binary (but obviously "sex" is more complicated than that). Social media algorithms definitely feed people's anger and lead them into having more extreme beliefs than they should. I've seen a few trans people, mainly men saying that they'd rather be seen as cis than trans, which makes sense. I feel really sorry for anyone having to go through a puberty they don't want, I don't understand how people in general don't have more sympathy for children who experience gender dysphoria. Really bizarre to hate a trans man for any of those reasons, but particularly being queer/poc. I've noticed a lot of gay cis men will only accept straight trans men and seem to think that gay trans men are just trying to invade their spaces/ get into their pants. Don't think it's worth getting angry at trans women for this. Everyone that needs to access DV shelters should be able to do so, and generally trans women seem pretty supportive of this idea. I've noticed that some feminist circles treat trans men as exceptions to men in general, like "oh you're okay because you're not like cis men", which comes across as really patronising and degrading because it's like suggesting that they're not real men. I'm fairly new to this sub (came here after the whole Pizzacake debacle) so I'm guessing that's why I've not seen posts about it yet. It's a shame that it's not seen as something more worth talking about outside of this subreddit though. What I don't understand is why more people don't see it like this. I've seen a lot of advocates for trans rights talk about transmisogyny, which I do think is an issue (ie. trans women being expected to adhere to stricter standards of femininity), but misandry plays a much bigger part in transphobia against trans women and it doesn't make sense to me why that doesn't get talked about.
