1	hey what if it's both? In Romulus' reign over Rome, wife-beating was not only allowed, but encouraged. In medieval Europe, men had the right to beat their wives, servants, and apprentices. You can clearly see the rank that women had in that society-they were far from equal to their husbands, and it was legal to beat them.
