IAAL: you got a bad attorney or a bad judge. This is not the standard. An attorney charging you 'tens of thousands' in a divorce is extreme in my experience unless you are very wealthy. It is legal to convict someone of rape based purely on testimony from the alleged victim, absent any evidence whatsoever. It is unconscionable, immoral, and horrific, of course, but it's legal.
