This is the most underrated comment on this thread. My son's mother gave him two "choices". The military or college. 30k and 4 years later he was lacking 3 classes and just could not do it any longer. He makes $13/hour and the college debt grows each year because he has it in deferment. I love him dearly and it pains me to see him waste his life when he could be doing better for himself. A $500 incident is a real financial struggle for him. There is a down side. Any money not used for education will be penalized just a like an early withdrawal from a 401k, which is 10% plus your current tax bracket. This kinda sucks if the kid doesn't go to school as it can easily negate any gains and turn it into a loss.
