Definitely agree with avoiding the 2 extremes you mentioned. Very important to have the option to socialize when you like and be alone when you like. It's easy to say "I don't need anyone else" or "I enjoy being a lone wolf" when no one wants to hang out with you or even knows you exist to begin with.

Med student here. I fixed lack of opportunities by cold approaching like a mother fucker throughout my daily activities (studying, errands, gym etc). At the very basic level, you have to be someone other people want to actively be around. You can try reading books like "How to Win Friends & Influence People" by Dale Carnegie or "Influence" by Robert Cialdini, but most of it is just gonna be you going out and finding out what works and what doesn't in terms of actively meeting new people in places you normally wouldn't try before.
