In that case she just refused to do her job. It has nothing to do with her being a woman. It has everything to do with her being a bad employee and coworker. The only excuses there are injury or pregnancy, assuming her contract had no exemptions for objects over a certain weight. Anyone using gender roles as an excuse for that is just looking for an excuse. Those kinds of people suck.

Why would you be skeptical? Any moderately functional human being can do drywall. That’s an easy job. Roofing can be challenging, depending on the kind of roofing. She did both of those things. She started off as a plasterer/painter, but got qualified in carpentry and plumbing while working with us. She did framing, drywall, etc faster and better than any of the big guys. For whatever reason she never did much plumbing with us.

Great question and tough to give an answer without context. In my company, I would give zero consideration to that for the architects (who pick up heavy things once a week, at most) but a ton of consideration to the general labourers, who sometimes have to carry heavy things up hill all day for several days in a row. I agree 100%. My comment was more meant as a minor clarification of a couple points than as a rebuttal. His frustration is justified and nothing about his comment appears sexist to me. I just felt like those two subtleties got lost in his post.

While it’s ridiculous to call you sexist for that, let’s clarify a few things: 1) “Equal” is not synonymous with “Identical”. You and I can be equals regardless of who can lift more weight. If I can lift more than you, I’m still your equal with regards to human dignity. Refusing to settle is dating somebody you aren’t attracted to. My brother is overweight, but only dates skinny women. Any woman over 110lbs is unattractive to him. His current gf weights 95lbs. Maybe I wasn't clear. I'm not trying to prove a wage gap. The wage gap that exists after adjusting for relevant factors (experience, job type, hours worked, etc) is minimal. If there is a wage gap, it is 2 or 3 percent. Meh, there is variance all the time. People get overaiid and underpaid all the time for many reasons. There will always be accurate anecdotal evidence. What matters most is the overall picture, not the individual Tom or Jane who genuinely has a shitty sexist boss.
