I think it is important to remember that men and boys are still given the implicit social expectation to be subservient to the women in their lives (treat me like a princess, happy wife happy life, etc) Relationships should be seen as partnerships, not hierarchies where one must dote on the other to be worthy of affection. It's a subversion of expectations in this humor: that the expectation is subservience but the outcome is the supposed patriarchal response we hear so much about. Beyond that? …

A consequence is a reflection of someone's responsibility in relation to a crime. By not applying the same consequence, the assumption is that the woman was not as responsible for the harm as man would be in the same situation.

Don't you understand? A 60 minute hour is a tool of the patriarchy to undermine the contributions of women. It therefore must be totally redesigned to fit the current year. Therefore a woman's hour will be 40 minutes and a man's hour will remain at 60 to stop hours from continuing to be problematic expressions of male dominance. /s

No worries. The court system believes in the complete equality of women with men. /s

That is very interesting, I had never heard of that distinction. I'll leave my comment up and +1 you.

In almost every group there are people who take the message too far and hurt others.

Not sure why he's describing mansplaining's application in this case, isn't that mansplaining? He could have either just left it at "I'm teaching my son not to mansplain" or just describing what he is doing. -20 third wave feminist points

The good news is my sister has since become a very responsible and empathetic human being. 18 may sound old for what she did, but there are a whole host of stupid things that people do at that age that seem to make no sense for their development level, especially when they want to get an edge in an argument. I also think that to some extent that some women never grasp the full extent of the consequences of falsely claiming rape because the consequences are so rarely applied to them. If society t…

I won't lie, the day I stood up for myself was the day everything got 1000% better with my classmates. It took another year or so, but the ones who were abusing me backed off when they realized I wasn't taking it anymore. PTSD is a difficult thing to live with. I ended up being diagnosed with it after nearly dying in a car accident when I was 19. As bad as my experience was (the waking nightmares, the inability at times to cope with simple experiences like going above 20 mph for a long while aft…

I think you hit on an important commonality. I think that everything you identified right there is excellent to address on a singular basis (social conditioning, gender cultivation). Yet even still, I think that the groupings don't address these problems, rather they distract from them. So, for example, without even considering who has it better or worse subjectively, we could discuss productive ways of dealing with the problem of pushing kids into pre-assigned roles. I think that the most impor…

Thank you for the respectful reply, as I stated in a separate comment, you get your +1 from me for that :) There's a lot to unpack from your statements and I agree with much of it in terms of the substance. The issues you brought up are completely valid. At one point I agreed with the premise of intersectionality, which is sort of the more palatable version of the privilege argument. It was introduced after my college years, and I think it is a far more moderate stance. That being said, I've sin…

I think the problem is the "let me educate you" crowd from pretty much any political slant. The assumption is that you, the recipient of the information, don't agree with them because you are simply not educated about the way the world works (in their self validated opinion) Let's assume we know nothing about anyone individually. At that point it comes down to the actions of the individual, their life circumstances, and what they bring to the table - not their skin, orientation, or gender. Other…

Discussions of this nature are important. It is not enough to simply listen and not be heard. You did a good thing by challenging my point of view to see where we coincided and where we might disagree civilly. Besides, if your point is that it is better to seek out dissenting points of view, how else would you understand those you don't agree with if you didn't post on their work from time to time for clarification? I think you did the right thing.

First, the assumption that I don't go into those communities and engage with them is incorrect. I have read and listened to the thought processes of liberal and radical feminists, proponents and detractors of the idea of "privilege' and I have come to my conclusions on the basis of weighing those arguments. Second, at no point did I say that the opposition did not consider male issues. (Which is ironically a straw man) What I was considering was the idea of a sex based privilege, not the people …

I suppose you have a counter argument? I'm willing to listen to it here or anywhere. The problem with those other subs, as I've seen, is that regardless of how politely I put forth my premise, anything that doesn't fit their beliefs is reflexively down-voted into oblivion, thus being less likely to be seen.

Thank you, it's pretty easy to keep this sort of thing to myself a lot of the time. People these days seem more inclined to shut down others than listen to them.
