Get a dog is great advice. I struggle with depression occasionally and my German Shepherd is gold. Wants to play, go for walks. Avoid meds if you can. Only my experience and the Docs know best but meds didn't suit me and were hell to come off. This'll sound silly but breathing exercises help. Got to be habitual though. Try to figure out your triggers. Alcohol, even coffee, can make depression worse.

When I did my Masters years ago a lass on the course couldn’t take stress so was allowed to not sit the exams and was given a grade on par with coursework. No worries. But, she then also lost her dissertation paper. Guess what? She was passed with the same grade as if she’d successfully passed the exams and given a A dissertation.....in other words was gifted a Masters degree.

Weekends. When married they were just another couple of days that I wasn't at work for. Weekends as a divorced chap are just brilliant! Want a lie-in? No worries, relax. Want to go for a hike, brekky, jog with the dog, or just lay back and watch footy?? All good, no problem. Weekends are great NOW.

I just moved from Sydney to Brisbane. PC n SJW in just 15 years has taken a great city, Sydney, massively backwards.

Dog people get it. Whiskey and a cigar, enjoy and think of your buddy. My dog is 10 now and already showing arthritis, gonna be more than a few tears when the inevitable hits. And I’ll be having a single malt or several... Good on you for making his life the fun it was.

Thanks. That's the point I was trying to make: if you don't have back pain, great. Just like being single. If you do have back pain, it's invisible. Like an unhappy man, miserable in his marriage. But no one cares.

I went with the ex to couples therapy. They just took turns explaining how my upset was irrelevant. Just because she hit me whenever she wanted. ’get over it, you're the cause of her anger, why shouldn't she get violent when she's not happy with you’. Second time we went the counsellor was female and accepted none of the above. Guess who never agreed to counselling again?

When I was getting divorced it was painful to admit that I felt I'd failed in the marriage. Helped by the Ex continually telling me I was a failure. So I told people that the marriage failed for the usual reasons, fallen out of love etc. Until someone pointed out that I was lying as they'd seen pictures of her on social media with another man. While we were still married. Lying for yourself is reprehensible, lying for a cheater is plain stupid.

You are both well advanced to me or my pals at 25, some 30 years ago. We were all convinced that the right one was out there. Just a matter of time. Oops. You're in a strong position to play the field while holding frame as to the reality of each relationship.

I'm now divorced and rebuilding. Doing lots of exercise again. My back is having a whinge. But all will be ok, got a nice 10 hr overnight flight in cattle. That'll help.

I occasionally still read the Guardian just to remind myself if their craziness. Arwa would be in prison if she was either male or not PoC. Comments are not allowed cos normal people object to her racism.

A couple of people have discussed whether women from other cultures might be preferable, sadly I doubt it. For example, far SE Asian women seem appealing for cultural reasons ie traditional, but once it’s legal, it’s the usual story for the guy. I’m in SE Asia right now and see Western men prostrating themselves at the feet of women who openly show its only for the money. Self pride is key.

I read his and thought that’s odd I don’t remember writing it, cos my story is identical. 9 yrs married. She’d moved her ew guy into the house I’d bought with her within one week. One week. And then the resource extraction began.

I’d love to disagree and say: nah the traditional culture will stave off the crazies. But no. Seeing this already in SE Asia. I was having a coffee earlier, I’m in Thailand, and sat next to me were a couple. Western male, Thai girl. She was on her phone constantly. He tried to engage but gave up. Until he talked about money. That got her attention. He was a desperately sad guy who realising money got her attention proceeded to talk about what he could buy for her. Her disinterest in him as a per…

Been there. Not fun. Took 18 months to get finances away from the cliff edge - yup divorce. But, I’m now amazed at how the money doesn’t just disappear. No one else to pay for. No one else to insist on $400 hair cuts, new clothes every week, having an expensive car when she works one bus ride from home.... Yup. It’s the nonsense that in years to come you will review and nod your head at your previous gullibility.

I tell the simple truth: 'been married, now divorced.' Men often ask nothing else and some even acknowledge there's nothing else to add. Women OTOH often are taken aback and start talking like I need 'fixing'. How to handle women like this: 'I'm sorry but my ex wife broke my heart and I couldn't trust enough to go through that gain.' Yup I take the emotional high road leaving women with no option but to resort to the usual 'time is a great healer' spiel. Problem solved.

Interesting points and, though not an economist, I tend to agree. House price craziness in Australia now slowly calming which raises my question: with a recession on the horizon should men divest, ie sell their property beforehand, or hold on and ride the wave? My feeling is to divest as far as reasonable and rent. Look for a stable, if unspectacular job that doesn't have sales targets.....oh, and don't get tied down!!

Tough situation. The advice above seems sensible. it's astonishing how low the women will go to hurt you. Nothing to do with 'fairness', everything to do with her personal selfishness even to the detriment of her own kids. You have my sympathies.

Similar thing happened to me with my Ex. She insisted on going to counselling to work on communication. Female counsellor talked about sharing opinions, give n take, meet in the middle etc etc. My Ex refused to go again. She just wanted someone to agree with her on everything.

I feel for him. We’re not perfect. I still shudder at some of the silly shit I did. For what I thought was love. Yup, he needs to run screaming into the hills but there’s gonna be tears.

Good point about ‘men have no real families’ perhaps exacerbated by the wife deliberately dividing them. ‘Why men love their wife’s and women don’t’ yeah you’ve got me their. No idea. But definitely correlates with my experience.

Great post. Friends of mine have suggested my ex, who definitely was bipolar, was full on NPD in the last few yrs of the marriage. So hard to describe. She was v intelligent and superb at deflection. Superb. She could start a row, scream at me for an hour, spend 2 hours explaining how it was my fault....and just forget the row like it never happened. V hard to cope with. It needs time for me to rationalise all this and remember that when she thumped me or called me retarded, that wasn't the voic…

An alternate thought: in western society demographically we're no longer replacing ourselves, hence one argument for immigration. But, if western societies could stabilise with lower numbers then there is a better chance overall of survival. More resources for everyone. Japan will be a fascinating case study - if I live long enough to see it.

Great article pal. I'm similar, my weakness for attractive women is my undoing. I have been divorced, smashed and determined 'Never Again'. Then I see a pretty smile, or gorgeous legs and am ready to hand over me house keys.

I also hav a dog, who is wonderful fun, always happy, always wanting to play, to run. When I got married we got a 12 wk old pup. Divorced 10 yrs later, she let me keep the dog but took majority of our wealth. Still think I got the better of that deal!!

I figure I'm only just out of triage. Was married for 10 years. Now hitting the gym. Happiest I've been for probably 4 years. I keep checking my bank accounts because they're now consistently healthy. No more of the 'I was feelin low so spent $6000 on a new dress. But not sure I really like it' etc etc. Biggest challenge is to avoid falling into the misogyny trap: Don't be that guy who got fucked over but can't move on.

Just so true. I don't have that many friends but never, never criticise them. If I'm not happy with something we just chat about it. My 3 or 4 best pals haven't fallen out ever. Support - yes. Criticise - no (unless its funny). Makes you wonder, I mean criticism of your partner, lady, is also a No, No. Or p'raps should be. But when married I occasionally needed to air what was going on at home. Just to say 'is it me, is she being just crazy/selfish?

I've gotta kelpie shepherd that the ex would have had put down. Not kidding, was given the ultimatum: find a place where you can keep a dog (difficult to rent a flat in Sydney that allows pets). Worked out beautifully 😎

Also an Aussie. Went thru divorce this tear. Won't bore you with the details but a couple of things stood out for me: 1. my solicitor stating that we must settle before going to family court bc at family court they'll start at 60:40 woman:man and only get worse. A hangover from the 70's apparently. 2. On the day she asked me to leave she cleared out the bank accounts. And apparently this was legal and after the settlement she won 72% to my 28%. No children involved. She admitted she'd gone to a …
