That's not a valid line of reasoning. His sign does indeed demonstrate that he's an idiot, but not necessarily more of an idiot than her. If he's that uninformed, it may be that he's smarter than she is but believes her when she tells him otherwise. We would need to dig deeper to figure out who is farther gone.

I think that the jokes are in the hyperbole, as you say, but that the underlying arguments are serious. If he truly meant for the arguments he makes to be themselves tongue-in-cheek, we would see some mockery of the people who make them.
