1	It's shit like this... What if your testimony also incriminates yourself in some crime? Then you have the right under the fifth amendment to not give testimony. Given the sheer number of different ways one can be in violation of state and federal law, it is impossible to know ahead of time what testimony may serve to incriminate you. Forcing someone to come forward with testimony may be in violation of their fifth amendment rights. 2	It's shit like this... In America, you are never obliged to talk to the police unless they have a subpoena. EDIT I am not a legal expert, so you will likely want to confirm this elsewhere. The reason for this is that in America you have the right to not incriminate your self. Because it cannot be known in advance what crimes you may or may not have committed, it also cannot be known in advance whether anything you say could serve to incriminate you for some crime you're not aware of.
