Yes, this is definitely true. Girls who aren’t perfectly social are ostracized and isolated from other girls. Autistic girls don’t pick up these cues naturally, they have to force themselves to pick the cues up after a certain amount of time before it’s too late (meaning they have no chance at being accepted by other girls). I was one of the girls that took too long and never made female friends.

I meant that it was harder for girls to get diagnosed with ADHD than boys, not that it was harder to get diagnosed with ADHD with autism. I probably didn’t do a good job of clarifying.

You’re thinking of ADHD, not Autism (though they often occur together). Autism is less energy-related and more of a social disorder.

As an autistic woman, it is a lot harder to be diagnosed and believed as a woman. Autism, until fairly recently, was thought of as a “boys’ disorder.” The presentation is different depending on gender, and the female presentation of autism often gets mistaken for bipolar and OCD (among other things). It is also much harder for girls to get diagnosed with ADHD. When I say I’m an autistic woman, a lot of people still don’t believe me (even though I was diagnosed as a baby).
