Yep, I’m my experience(married in Japan) marriage is very much about creating a family unit, and not purely about romance.

Idk I’m fat and fairly ordinary looking(in a country full of slim and attractive women) and my husband is pretty HVM. What’s the attraction? In his words “what’s inside is important”, “we have fairly similar values and views”, “We can talk for hours and I don’t get bored”

I didn’t find decent men until I left the country 😂

Yeah my husband never posts to sns(his profile pic was almost 10 years old) but was very quick to change his relationship status and profile pic to a picture with me in it when we got married!

This is exactly why my husband knows my holiday schedule better than I do!

I would honestly divorce my husband if it ever got even close to being like this. Fortunately he does all these things without me needing to remind him…in fact right now he is in the kitchen making our lunches to take to work, and it’s a properly cooked bento box lunch, not some halfassed sandwich either.

My 70 year old MIL has all the men chasing her! One of the old guys in our building(she lives with us) always gives her flowers from his field, and she’s popular with regular customers at her restaurant. Her “boyfriend” is a retired firefighter who is still in great shape and takes her out all the time. He is constantly calling her, and they cook food for each other, it’s really cute.

Same here! Also I have a baby daughter and I worry so much about what it will be like for her in the future. Thankfully her father is a great example of a HVM, but we also live in a country that is so behind when it comes to female empowerment and gender equality.

And worse...yesterday I was reading a biography of a Chinese woman called “Daughter of China”. The author relates some of her family history, including a part where her grandfather threw his newborn into a river because it was a girl, and then casually replaces the baby with a male baby he fathered with another women. I was holding my own baby daughter when I was reading this so I cried. I related this to my husband(who comes from a similarly patriarchal Asian culture) and was like “how could he…

Actually, lack of preschool places is a major barrier for a lot of women in Japan! Childcare isn’t expensive, but especially in Tokyo, it can be very hard to get a preschool place. 2 of my coworkers want to return to work but can’t for the time being because they couldn’t get childcare places in their areas. We get a small childcare allowance each month(equivalent to about 150 usd) and depending on the area medical care for children is free until either entering elementary school or middle schoo…

I feel so conflicted about that book and movie...I read/watched it was I was around 13 and super naive, and loved it. I became really interested in Japan, and geisha and kimono because of it, and eventually ended up moving to Japan 9 years ago, and now am here long term(have a job I love and married here). Upon rereading the book when I was older was so disgusted at the orientalism and gratuitousness but at the same time I can’t deny that it had a major influence on me when I was younger.

I used to work with a guy who was quite a religious and conservative type, but a really decent guy I enjoyed talking to. He’s married with two daughters and obviously loves his family, and one thing he said always stuck with me to paraphrase was “I love my daughters and would do anything for them but I think Its important that I always show them that my wife is number one to me, so that when they grow up they expect the same from their future husbands and not end up with men who don’t love and r…

Sorry I don’t know any more info about it, it was in the printed newspaper as filler sometime last year. I think you’re right to be wary! I have a few western Asian friends, and guys would always hit on them as a “last resort” when they couldn’t get a local woman🤢

I love the fact that white guys generally won’t even bother with me, they are almost always the most low value and entitled of the lot I think that at least one of the reasons western women often find better relationships than their male counterparts is that usually women can speak the language and therefore have better communication and relationships, Japanese men who are interested in/open to having serious relationships with western women are more open minded/less traditional, and want more e…

That figure comes from an article in Nikkei Shimbun that was about compatibility between different nationalities and Japanese from earlier this year, husband read it and was rather pleased with the fact we are one of the “most compatible” pairings haha(I’m a white woman)

Yep, I have a pretty low opinion of at least 95% of the white guys I meet in Japan(lived here for 8 years now). They get here and immediately find a pick me to be their second mummy/interpreter/manage their bills and documents because none of them care to learn Japanese. I know one guy who was so low value he made his (extremely poor because her family lost everything in the 2011 tsunami) wife buy her own wedding ring, and then went around bragging about how he got his wife to buy her own rings.…

It looks like the message is just tacked onto the opening from a random anime...the subtitles don’t match meaning of the song at all

Yes! While it’s not the best room in the apartment, when I moved in with my husband, I got a room given over to me to use for my ferrets, arts and crafts and books, and spare bed for times I want to sleep by myself. MIL has her own bedroom too, but husband doesn’t have his own “space” anywhere. This is in Tokyo too, where space is premium.

I know so many men who are married to Japanese women and live IN JAPAN who refuse to learn the language, even after years of living in the country. Their wives basically have to look after all the bills and documents because their husbands are functionally illiterate in the local language. Funnily enough most non Japanese women married to Japanese men can speak the language and manage their own life admin to at least some extent.

In in my early 30s and on Facebook I can see nearly all the girls I went to high school with, and my cousins all had babies without getting married first, and still aren’t married... I’m currently pregnant with my first, but there’s no way in hell I would have let it happen before getting married, with someone I could absolutely trust, especially since I rely on either work or marriage to sponsor my visa.(I’m from a western country but live in Asia) So far my husband has been pretty HVM about it…

My husband seems to internalized the “men must work hard for their families” part of his culture but not the “women must be slaves to the house and family” part, whereas I feel like a lot of men just want their wife/mummy substitute/bangmaid without the hard work part. We got the rare ones indeed! We both love cooking and food so we enjoy making fancy meals for each other, or cooking together.

Sounds a lot like comments I got from a lot of Japanese men when I was dating. My husband(also Japanese) on the other hand makes me all the food
