IIRC the body can deal with fasts of up to 16 hours with no problem at all (except for possible food cravings from time to time). As long as he drinks water, he'll be fine. Still, here are some ideas: Unsalted nuts. Maybe mixed with dried fruit and/or unsalted sunflower seeds.
