Children are a lot more sophisticated than you're allowing for. I literally know of nobody who, when finding out Santa Claus wasn't real, had a fit and decided to never trust an adult again. I know a lot who thought "huh, that was kind of a fun belief, but now I feel good because I'm more of a grown-up".

I wouldn't be too harsh on Google. They're in an impossible position here, and are simply being forced to play a political game. Let's focus our anger where it belongs: on the wider narrative and the trigger-happy, unaccountable, self-satisfied, juvenile mob who are behind it.
