If you can hide it, I'm all for a video camera. You can always just turn over the audio and not reveal you have video. Can't hurt to go the extra step.

That's interesting. Do you have a source for that in plain English and not legal language? A quick Google search shows some links for civil cases but nothing for criminal ones.

Cops aren't supposed to care so that's not surprising. Their job is to build a case against you, not help you out. Why is he talking to the cops in the first place? Rule #1 is to never talk to police. Only talk to your lawyer.

Honestly, she seemed pretty chill in the moment, and I figured it wasn't a big deal. I prefer being upfront most of the time. It didn't turn out well, but I did what I thought was for the best in the moment.

That's not how the legal system works. If the recording was made illegally you can be charged for wiretapping and then go through a separate rape trial without being allowed to present the recording.

Well, technically you could have both. If the recording was made illegally you can be charged for it and then go through a rape trial without being allowed to present it. You're too hotheaded. Think about things carefully before you say/do them.

It's legal in one-party consent states. It's not legal in two-party consent states. That's why I specifically said "If you live in a two-party consent state, do not reveal that you have a recording to her over any traceable means. Only mention it or play it for her in person after you've made a copy for safekeeping. As far as I know, it's a felony if you record a conversation without the other person's knowledge in a two-party consent state."
