Wow, that's intense. Maybe it's better to cut her off, then.

Like, for real, or because you're mad at her? Sometimes I say mean things about people but regret them afterwards. In those situations I just had to let off steam because there is some unresolved tension between us and we haven't had a good talk about it. Other times, I say mean things and mean them. With some people, the best thing you can do is get the fuck away from them. Which one do you think your sister is?

Bro, are you on Acid?

Well yeah, but talking to your sister isn't Twitter. Try guiding the conversation away from the usual shouting matches. You won't gain anything by rattling off MRA talking points.

Let's not play identitarian language games, though. Just makes people more defensive when you try to explain why torturing and killing innocent beings for your own sense pleasure might be sketchy morals.

Man, the circlejerk here is real. It's OP's sister, not some random internet chick, ffs. Guess I have to make a sensible post now, and I hate being sensible! OP, have you tried talking to your sister about how the hateful things she's saying make you feel? I've dealt with a number of friends and family saying terrible things to me out of defensiveness, either in connection to veganism or feminism, and the one thing that has always worked was appealing to their empathy for me, not as a toxic man …

Gender studies is not the same thing as "gender critical". ... gender studies as an academic discipline was started by feminists and continues to be ran be feminists. It is also what dictates feminist theory. When people talk about the patriarchy, male oppression, and stuff like that, they're pulling very specifically from academic feminism or "gender studies". I think you misunderstood my post, because what you wrote doesn't contradict what I wrote, quite the contrary. Except for the part where…

Don't just jump on this because it confirms one of your biases! Seriously, just look at the title. "Should Feminists Stop Talking About..." That's an immediate red flag right there. And, predictably, this is not a case of people talking sense, it's a case of Gender Feminist vs. RadFem infighting. Look up the author, she's a Gender Studies and Critical Race person. Those people have a weird alliance with Muslim traditionalists and slam anything critical of Islamic cultures by calling it "Islamoph…

Good bait and switch, but please check your punctuation and grammar.

When you take it to mean that, then yes, my experience could be categorized as toxic masculinity. Once you get beyond the discussion of abstract terms like toxic masculinity, patriarchy or racism and talk about single, well-defined issues, people tend to agree with each other more because the focus is on actual things happening in the world we share, not word games centered around ideology. And it's always better to talk about things, not words. No matter my misgivings about the term, I've never…

As usual, toxic sludge spills from the US to the UK and then on over to us chumps in DE. The humanities department at my third-rate university has already become a pretty hostile environment, and I really wish I had started earlier when it wasn't quite as bad.

Eh, dunno. I've had both. I'm pretty emotionally volatile and used to be open about it and just cry and talk it out, the way that is normal for women but not men. The conservative types gave me the "drama queen, man up" shtick, the progressive types simply turned their backs on me when it became too inconvenient for them, even after years of friendship. Either way, now I know that as a man I'm usually expected to handle any negative emotion by myself, the norm is just being reinforced in differe…

Don't know where you're from, but that doesn't fit my personal experience in Germany. I've never witnessed a scene like that, and the only pressure I perceive is to give up my seat to people who actually have difficulty standing up, usually because of age or pregnancy. And so far, there have always been enough people happy to give up their seats. Reinforcement seemed to be positive rather than negative, too, because people on the bus give you good person points for giving up your seat and don't …

Fair enough. I was actually fairly surprised when I first read about the effects of circulating testosterone levels, and I also got a better idea about the ways in which masculinity can be framed positively (especially the nurturing aspect was an aha moment), so I see what you're getting at there. As for "emotional labor", that can go both ways, but it's usually only acknowledged when it's women getting a raw deal. Men are often assumed by default to be emotionally stable and dependable, and end…

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but it sounds like the only "positive" quality of masculinity you're talking about is self-sacrifice. When men talk about being stuck between a rock and a hard place, that's the rock. Self-sacrifice is positive for the people men sacrifice themselves for, but not necessarily for the man, and it's not always voluntary either.

Doesn't apply here. We're not talking about tankie LARPers becoming nazis, but people getting politicized based on their emotional needs. Sure, the feminists spreading hate speech 'ironically' are terrible, and they use many of the discursive strategies popularized by racists, but that is not a strong argument in favor of Horseshoe Theory. In fact, I'd say Horseshoe Theory is not a valuable contribution to political thought. Politics happens on a number of axes, not just one; grouping Stalin and…

I had a similar reaction to your comment. So we do have something in common, I guess.

I'm white, cis, and male, and not on top of any social hierarchy. I have learned early on to take other people's feelings into account when I enter a room, and not only that, people lean on me emotionally because as a "cis male" I'm expected to be stable and dependable on top of that. The way you presume to know my experience (in woke language: invalidate my lived experience) because of received "wisdom" is arrogant and hurtful, and in that way no different from any other kind of sexism and raci…
