You're not wrong about the faults of BMI. I know it also by personal experience having been in the best shape of my life when overweight rather than normal, due to gaining a lot of weight at the gym. However, changes in muscles mass are really unlikely to explain that correlation at all. While BMI can be badly calibrated for men with relatively much muscle mass at the normal and overweight range, muscle mass will not move people to the obese category in the amounts that it would make a statistic…

Marijuana also causes people to eat a lot when they are high. Having excessive fat... It does, especially for new users. However, for reasons unknown to me, cannabis users statistically have lower BMI than non-users. A National Survey of Marijuana Use Among U.S. Adults According to Obesity Status, 2016-2022 Conclusion: Marijuana use is correlated with lower BMI. As legalization and prevalence of the drug in the U.S. increases, the prevalence of obesity may decline. However, clinicians should vie…

Nature has official Journal Impact Factor of 48.5 (2024). It is consistently among the top tier of all multidisciplinary scientific publications worldwide. https://www.nature.com/articles/nature08711 While further study, as it's supposed to, may give better insight on findings published there too, as a source it is as good as it gets when looking for trustworthy peer reviewed content. These findings on effects of testosterone are in line with other research on the topic. Testosterone seems to mo…

I think the strength difference by gender is very likely larger than that. Grip strength is a very good indicator of general upper body strength. It's very easy to measure, so it can be used practically for a big group. By grip strength, almost all men are stronger than almost all women. In these NHANES data, 89% of adult men are stronger than the 89% of adult women. https://www.reddit.com/r/dataisbeautiful/comments/4vcxd0/almost_all_men_are_stronger_than_almost_all_women/

It's not really back up. Erin Pizzey was an outlier, and was treated absolutely horribly by the feminists of that time too.

Erin Pizzey established the world's first domestic violence shelters. She was once a feminist, but boy did they turn on her! Pizzey says that she has been the subject of death threats and boycotts because her experience and research into the issue led her to conclude that most domestic violence is reciprocal, and that women are as capable of violence as men. Soon after establishing her first refuge, Pizzey asserted that much of the domestic violence was reciprocal. She reached this conclusion wh…

Women do sports less, and watch sports less, hence women's sports get less funding. If women watched women's sports, they'd have all the funding they want. Women watch Temptation Island instead.

Yes, men are stonger and better at extreme violence. When a man and a woman attempt to kill their spouse, men are much more likely to succeed. Women do try a lot though.

Studies on that have women self-reporting as more emphatetic. I don't trust that self-assesment myself. Are women the more empathetic gender? The effects of gender role expectations Across two studies, women rated themselves higher in empathy than men in all experimental conditions, whereas an objective female superiority in emotion recognition was only evident in one condition.

There are of course exceptions, as in everything, but almost all men are stronger than *almost all women", so it's a reasonable assumption until you know more. There's only overlap between the strongest women and weakest men. Combined grip strength by age and sex. Combined grip strength is the sum of the largest isometric grip strength readings from each hand, measured using a handgrip dynamometer. Grip strength is an index of upper body strength. Each point is one person. Sample size = 7064. Da…

I'm from Finland. My grandfathers were conscripted and had to fight the Russians. Both absolutely refused to ever tell me anything about the war beyond - "Those were bad times, you're better off not remembering those times." Still, both told me I'd have to do my duty as well if need be. My father did his service when it was his time. A year of training as a conscript, and months worth of additional training later as a reservist. The same goes for me. Safe, but uncomfortable. I'm very happy my gr…

Your friend very likely struggled for reasons other than her gender. Studying discrimination by gender in recruitment, none has been found against women, quite the opposite. They're strongly favored specifically in male dominated fields. Abstract: Gender discrimination is often regarded as an important driver of women’s disadvantage in the labour market, yet earlier studies show mixed results. However, because different studies employ different research designs, the estimates of discrimination c…

More men are successful in with the attepts at suicide. And this is due to the means of suicide men use. It's not because of the means. Even studying the same method (poison), men are much more successful. Female suicide attempts can more often be classified as parasuicidal gestures, that aren't meant to actually succeed. You are more likely to succeed when you are trying. A cross-national study on gender differences in suicide intent A significant association between suicide intent and gender w…

Men are pigs, dogs, savage beasts, etc. Such language has pretty much always been excused and defended. This study might be of interest to some here. Animalistic slurs increase harm by changing perceptions of social desirability Propaganda and hate speech regularly incorporate references to the victim group as dangerous and disgusting animals, such as rats and cockroaches. These animalistic slurs lead to further intergroup harm. Given the prevalence of dangerous online hate speech, accurately un…

I did. I also wanted her to sell her pre-marriage property and she did. That's how we could afford one big enough for kids. We both had something to put together and we made a pre-nup so we'd walk out with our fair shares according to what each of us put in if shit ever hits the fan, and there was absolutely no disagreement about that. You know, like adults with agency and accountability figuring out how to make it fair. Only gold diggers hate pre-nups. If she/he is against one, just walk.

While I have nothing at against her posthumous award, why would few women having been awarded that mean that one should? That would be as silly as naming a man the mother of the year just because it hasn't been done yet.

Evolution isn't about quality of life, but survival of the fittest, or at least fit enough. When enough children and women to take care of them survive pregnancy and childbirth, evolution doesn't care - and overwhelming majority do.

You don't think forced labor it wrong, you just justified it, You could say I'm of the "end justifies the means" school of thought here, which is obviously a slippery slope, and could lead to really evil things misused. Just not as evil as Russia. I'd however like to point out that while our national service law only forces men to military service, it also forces women to forced labor in time of crisis. When Russia last invaded Finland both my grandfathers were drafted, but both my grandmothers …

Where are you from? I'm sure it sounds crazy and militaristic if you are from a safe western country, but we really have to be kind of doomsday peppers as a nation. And we're doing just fine with it. Russia just really is the boogeyman from horror stories everyone would like to think aren't true. To be honest, I don't really think single women in Finland would en masse get pregnant to avoid service if they were included. I trust most I know would likely pick up a rifle if need be. Like there is no other way of protect your country than conscript men. That's the thing. There just is no other way a population of five million can have an army of million without draft. There are so many men's rights issues that can theoretically be improved, but Finland must have soldiers. It's not fair. It's not equal. But Russia really doesn't give a flying fuck if we're fair. Russia gives a fuck if we're weak or strong, and this is something we need to be strong. If we don't have conscript…

When it comes to conscription, she's just not relevant at all, nor has any other prime minister of ours been for long. Finland has very very high support for conscription, because we have to. We have the biggest artillery in western Europe, we have bomb shelters for 4.8M people and 900K well trained reserve with a population of 5.5M. We have modern airforce with F18 planes and F35s on order. We build a bomb shelter in every fucking school and daycare, and we build every bridge with keeping in mi…

I wonder what thoughts this study would provoke on r/askpsychology. Here's a cross-national study in gender differences in suicidal intent. I think I can see what's the difference. Those vans Finnish police use are mostly Volkswagen Transporters, it's the default police vehicle they have. They don't actually have room for transporting a big group, and they aren't for busing people, but they're instead full of equipment with only small cramped space for the passengers. So when you need to move more people, they aren't what is used at all. When you think of the purpose they have, they're really just big fat cruisers - our police just …
/r/PussyPassDenied05/09/23 08:40 PM

the vans require extra personnel just to drive them, they can't do traffic stops or anything proactive Why not? Sure, a sedan is lighter and more nimble, but our police force (Finland) actually does use mostly vans, and they seem to work fine as the general purpose vehicle - they're so packed with equipment a sedan wouldn't fit all the toys. Why do vans require extra personnel in your use case, I've always considered them easy to drive too? https://poliisi.fi/en/-/first-fully-electric-police-pat…

We are 5M people living next to Russia. We can't do without conscription no matter if it isn't equal - it's just one of those uncomfortable truths. It's not a problem for a foreigner moving here though, unless you get yourself a citizenship while in your twenties.

This article might be of interest: it's about the very topic whether the population size difference is a likely explanation to the difference in the level of top male and female players. The writer paid extra attention to Indian stats. https://chessandmind.com/en/population-size-gender-gap-in-chess I won't take a guess if the difference is because of cultural factors, innate ability or what, but I'm convinced the number of players is not the explanation.
/r/MensRights19/08/23 05:57 PM

my guess is just that there are more male chess players than female ones, and thus the talent pool is deeper There are more male players, but relative to population, women are underrepresented at the top. It's unlikely to be due to number of players, as chess is popular enough. https://chess24.com/en/read/news/the-gender-gap-in-top-level-chess

Posting the pictures to a group with the purpose of gathering pictures of people, identifying then, and spreading information about them? Obvious GDPR breach. There are differences between EU countries when it comes laws and their interpretation about publishing pictures people. This is however obviously illegal in any of them due to data protection regulation.

While I agree that violence against men and women is generally handled very different in media, I have a counterpoint here: Netflix show "You" has a murderer and stalker who keeps women imprisoned in his basement as the protagonist, and the show has been really well received - there are four seasons out. There is a difference though, as in that series it's very clear that he's a sick fuck, not a hero.

The list of symptoms isn't that different, but they were more frequent and severe for men. As an example, the pill causes acne for 2% of women whereas half of the men got that symptom. Nearly a quarter of participants experienced pain at the injection site, nearly half got acne, more than 20 percent had a mood disorder, 38 percent experienced an increased sexual drive, and 15 percent reported muscle pain. Despite the more severe side-effects, the men didn't want to stop. The study had to be shut…

Finland seems to be worse. ... which I find curious as a Finn. The social/economic grounds just means you need to say "it's not a good time for a baby for me", and it's up to your say so - no proof required or anything, so an abortion is irl freely available until term restriction. Lately some womens groups have been raising as an issue here, that you need approval of two doctors instead of only one, but that is not much of a hoop to jump through really either - the first doctor to approve is th…
