What you describe isn't the earnings gap. The earnings gap is: a male Doctor who works full time with no career breaks for 30 years will have earned more over those 30 years than a woman who worked part-time as a Doctor for 30 years, and took several career breaks to have children. It's comparing like-for-like and factoring in employee choices.
