You may just have to accept that you will feel end up feeling pain either way. Choosing to avoid a romantic relationship due to your mental illness sounds like the right thing to do, you know yourself, but even doing this correct thing may result in sadness of some kind later. Just as a romantic relationship would inevitably cause sadness to yourself and to another human when it blows up. There is probably no option that is utterly pain-free. At least remaining alone will spare one other person.
