I was the sole breadwinner for many of the years. Then when the kids were self sufficient and she could have gone back to work, she refused. It's a beautiful thing (for her) to refuse to work, and then having "never worked" become the justification for me to pay her even more.

Married young, so I (and she) still have about 2 decades of working years ahead of us before retirement. Everyone has college degrees. Only challenge is that she doesn't want to work or build a career -- would rather suck the cash all out of me.

She got both child support and alimony. There wasn't an either or option -- it was both! Technically there is law for recalculating alimony at the point of retirement, but it isn't automatic -- ya gotta go back to court to make it happen.
