Some research shows the amount and direction of violence in DV/IPV relationships is similar man to woman and woman to man. Most research shows men are more often violent, but seems that most IPV relationships have bidirectional violence or I've seen it called co-occuring. So definitely inconclusive. But no research says women are more violent. Apparently some research shows women are more often abusive in uni-directional IPV relationships (didn't know this until today) but still not more violent…

I agree but this is not a small number. Men are much more violent. I also agree with this. Black and poor communities are policed at a much higher rate which explains the higher convictions. This artificially increases the statistics in regards to number of convictions. I'm having trouble finding the statistic but I thought most criminologist believed white and black people committed about the same amount of crime. But I could be wrong. The focus on black communities due to the things you mentio…

But what was your point? Individuals don't represent the total? I agree. That's why I trust the 89% statistic. What does that mean, more criminal?

Lucy Letby accounted for 0.04% of murders in 2015. Do you think that's an accurate representation of neonatal nurses? What percentage do you think would be an appropriate percentage to be representative? 51%? Maybe 60 or 70? How about 89%? Because in 2015, 89% of murders were committed by men. https://ucr.fbi.gov/crime-in-the-u.s/2015/crime-in-the-u.s.-2015/tables/expanded_homicide_data_table_3_murder_offenders_by_age_sex_and_race_2015.xls

It's a metaphor. The point is that they're not the same. The point is that, at a certain percentage, the likelihood of being wrong about a man being an abuser is too high to assume he's not one and risk being hurt. Research is very clear that men perpetrate more violence than women. Even if we pretend it's the same rate (which it's not), men are more likely to cause serious harm, sexually abuse, and/or hospitalize their victims than women are. So yes, women have every right to assume every man i…

Would be very interested to read these studies, do you have any links?

I actually didn't know the statistics for non-reciprocated violence. Research clearly shows women perpetrated at a higher rate. In IPV/DV relationships. It's also clear that this is the only statistic and context where women perpetrated violence more than men. The "all men" argument is very clearly a position rather than a fact. It's clearly not true all men perpetrate, but if I put you in a room with 100 snakes and said "not all of them are poisonous" wouldn't you act as if all were?

I made the arguments, I backed them up with statistics, and then I referenced articles to prove I didn't make the statistics up. You know you have nothing to back you up but your feelings, so you complain, criticize and then leave. I really wouldn't recommend giving advice on how to use articles when you can't provide any.

What does that even mean? Just read the article? It's not my responsibility to educate you. I provided the statistic and the research to back it up. If you don't agree with it, it's up to you to provide something else like other research or to critique the statistic at the level of the research. Just saying it doesn't make sense to you is not an argument. You get that right?

Wow! did you just pluck "I think" and "So my guess" out of context and make an argument out of that? You seem upset. I gave you a stat and you disagreed with it because it didn't make sense with your internal bias. You didn't provide any proof. So there was no context to be pulled from. conclusive evidence I never said I did. I actually said it was inconclusive. But of course we have to recognize that more research points to men being more violent. disagree completely. That's not how this works.…

I think So my guess You can think and guess all you want. I provided statistics. You can read the articles critique the methods and results, the validity and reliability, the generalizability. Or you can just disagree with the stats because you don't like them and come up with your own untested explanations. you need to back it up with some pretty hard facts. First, I brought plenty of stats. But also, feeling undervalued is not a reason to be angry at women for receiving support. I agree that m…

Yes women should be afraid because men are threats. Men should also be afraid of other men for the same reason. Also. Women are more likely to be seriously injured by a threatening man than men are. So they have more reason to be afraid.

So bc it doesn't happen in broad daylight it doesn't happen at all? Honestly I have no idea what you're trying to say with your second point.

You're pretty convincing, but I guess I should go look up the data: The data on violence are overwhelmingly consistent in reporting males having a higher rate of committing violence than women (https://bjs.ojp.gov/content/pub/pdf/cvus0702.pdf Table 38 and 44), (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sex_differences_in_crime don't dunk on wikipedia, it has more sources than any of my grad papers ever did), (https://www.niussp.org/health-and-mortality/americas-high-homicide-rate/) Here's a softball for you…

The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence disagrees and reports more women experience DV and IPV (https://ncadv.org/STATISTICS). Other papers show a similar rate (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29294920/), but in their discussion sections, they recognize a difference in reporting, and in one specific article, they recognized that the definition for IPV/DV for women was expanded to allow more instances to qualify (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6395526/) and they still repor…

The "all men" statement seems intentionally inflammatory so that people argue about it. But underneath it's an accurate representation and seems to be more of a stance or practice than a belief. The full sentence: I have to treat all men as if they are all abusers because the risk of not doing so is too high. It's not worth assuming a stranger is a good guy because the result of being wrong is too severe. The statistics speak for themselves. I think there's a better way of talking about it than …

Clever. Hey don't get mad at me. You were the one that cited the statistics. They clearly show men are involved with more violence than women. Maybe he should be more worried about being attacked by a man just like she is.

except rape or other sexual assault. Maybe that's what she was worried about. So yeah she's in more danger because he's around. Also. Who do those males receive the violence from? Males are more likely to commit violence than women. So my sentence is still true. She's in more danger because he's around.

And the question is: do they? Yes. Statistically this woman was more in danger with OP than she would have been walking alone.

Name a famous masochist for me. It's hard isn't it. Masochists don't create much violence. Now name a famous sadist. You could choose from some world leaders probably. But also every serial killer (who also happen to be men almost exclusively). Which created more violence. The sadist or masochist?

I'm not cherry picking. Those stats aren't relevant. There's a huge difference between waiting to experience pain and wanting to cause it. We're talking about who engages with violent sex more. The answer is clearly men.

Why didn't you read the articles you posted? The first yahoo article reported that when women watch porn, they watch it for a little over a minute longer on average than men. But men are still watching porn more often. Just for shorter sessions. The second article reports that women watch the lesbian category more often than men. But idk if I'd consider that "violent." You said women are more likely on average to watch violent categories of porn. The third article literally says: "Across studies…

You've been trying to pull me into an argument with claims I haven't made this whole time. I have no desire to argue. I haven't changed anything I've said and don't need to prove to you what's already been proven. Idk why you're harping on this. It makes sense that this stuff upsets you, men have been repeatedly over blamed in media not just in this. Maybe arguing is a way for you to try and regain some control in your life. Either way, I hope you find some peace.

Sure, if that was the only thing that impacted the study, then yes it would be colossal. You're getting caught up on one point. Certainly the reduced reporting impacts the study, but so does the selection bias and other forms of limited external validity. But I'm fine with the statistic that women perpetrate more than men (although it's not 70/30). But my original point stands, women are more often injured and that is a good reason to have a female only clinic. The conversation is so much bigger…

False reports happen all the time with self reports, but I never claimed there were any false reports, I'm not sure where you're getting that. They don't have to prove a difference in reporting between genders because it's already been proven (https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.1177/088626099014012003). Read the limitations section for that information, not the abstract.

No, I'm not saying that at all. I said men are less likely to report. False reports would be more often. If you want to go back and read the study, you'll see the authors themselves talking about the limitations of self report studies.

Women don't cause male heart attacks or diabetes. Having a woman in a hospital that treats mainly male diseases has no impact on treatment. Typically, men have created environments that cause women to escape to DV shelters. Therefor, having men in DV shelters has a huge impact on treatment.

Each of these studies for heterosexual couples use self report measures and neither measured the severity of violence. Reports were more often of women than of men, but that does not mean women perpetrate more often, only that they are reported on more frequently. This would be consistent with previous research that says women are more likely to report DV and IPV than men are (see https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.1177/088626099014012003). So I completely agree that men are unfairly repres…

While it is true that men and women engage DV and IPV at the same rate, women are significantly more likely to be severely injured and hospitalized than men. It is important that we have safe places for women because of this statistic. This statistic doesn't mean men aren't hurt and the public definitely needs more awareness and discourse about male victims. It does, however, completely justify a women only clinic.
