I am also from a culture where it is normal and acceptable to stay with parents, but years ago I realized it was holding me back. It was necessary for me to move out to establish more independence for myself and to grow a backbone.

Animating expressions and emotions into large eyes is traditionally easier and more visually impressive than the more realistically sized eyes in no -anime influenced American animation. Think He-Man, or GI Joe art styles. The art style was more realistic and there was not a focus on animating expressions into eyes. Its true some Japanese persons may dislike their eyes but I highly doubt it would be a majority.

It depends on whether the guy was seeking his wife's opinion or her . There is a vast difference between the two concepts. When you seek someone's opinion, you are not neccesarily handing over the final decision to them. You may only be taking their opinion into consideration while you reserve your right to make the final decision regardless of whether they agree or not. If you are seeking permission, then you have given final decision making power to someone else.
