I get what you’re saying OP but it’s not just “shelling yourself”, it’s that it can be weird and off-putting to “be yourself” with someone who doesn’t yet know you. Like, have you ever met someone who does oddly specific things like refer to stuff by slang only they and their friends know or talk about things you have no context for as though you do? I’m seeing the same lame stereotypical advice here so I’ll amend it. Men and women can have successful, platonic friendships. But You can’t have a successful, platonic friendship with someone who wants more than that. It isn’t about the genders/sexes, it’s about attraction and romantic feelings. I’m an American and don’t know enough about Aussie law or culture to really know. Don’t know if there’s a stigma there in pursuing “barely legal” women. If you and her hit it off and she just happened to be 17 and it’s just a casual thing (and legal) it should be fine.
