I think punishment is good to prevent re-offenders as much as possible. It's very ineffective in this. Increased sentences don't lead to decreased repeat offenses. If you want to decrease repeat offenses, then you need to stop thinking about punishment and start thinking about rehabilitation.

Justice should seek to give the criminal rehabilitation and give the victim restitution. In the case of a thief, being made to pay back all damages, plus punitive damages*, should be enough. *Only because not all thieves are caught. If a thief was only liable for direct damages, they could steal over and over again, profiting when they don't get caught and coming out even when they do. These punitive damages are only there to prevent stealing from being profitable.

Girlfriend's brother was trying to show off by shifting 'manually' while entering the freeway, and he fucked up the final shift up to 'D', instead throwing it into reverse. Let's be honest here. Nobody who kills for sport is a "hunter". Agreed. Pulling the trigger of a rifle requires about as much skill as a child trying to match a square peg into the correct hole. Well, pulling the trigger is easy. It's the aiming that's hard. But yeah, hunting is about as much of a sport as tic-tac-toe with a 3 year old.
