THIS also if you see someone else is listening (and sometimes even if they're not) say something funny like "fine/whatever fuck you bitch" if you get straight ignored, sometimes that'll get a reaction and bam! Any publicity is good publicity. Of course this is in a casual setting. In a professional setting, always make sure the attention is already on you before speaking if you can help it.

Personally I try to do my share of enriching but FUN things. A short list of mine (some of these I've done some I haven't yet): Take an AFF course, shoot guns, get your pilots license, learn to play an instrument, ride motorcycles, ride dirt bikes, kite surf, etc. These are all things that give you something to talk about at the bar that's different than most guys AND its something you can include others in. Girls will think its super hot if you can jump out of a plane with them, take them flyin…

Honestly you're being a bit obtuse. I doubt you could find a programmer in silicon valley who doesn't have a side project. Ever watch "Silicon Valley"? "Everybody has a startup" If it's not done during work hours and doesn't conflict with what your company does, they can fuck off.
