Yes. But never without experiencing real trauma. A man with no empathy doesn’t acquire any overnight from nowhere

You’re like 22 and you’ve got a lot of compassion still to learn, peace.

Yes agreed! I can’t stand text conversations, I deliberately take ages to reply so I don’t get stuck in any. Only exception is my boyfriend and when we’re both at work we barely text anyway.

Thanks so much, I still wouldn’t say I’m fully recovered but all the support here is incredibly helpful

Oh my god yes. When I had zero self-respect I would occasionally come across women who did, and I am ashamed to admit I resented and ridiculed them, and dismissed them as self-obsessed. Actually maybe that is how some people see me now. Internalised misogyny is real and horrifyingly powerful

Eh, I'm not so bothered by this. Don't get me wrong I wouldn't post it, but its meant to be a joke. My boyfriend has stood guard many times while I've pissed in bushes and vice versa.

They are, you're right. Military competence and masculinity are intertwined and completely inextricable. I hated visiting his mess - I felt the stinging shame of having been born female so very acutely there, even though my list of achievements can rival any macho-man-man. And then watching him join in with the misogynistic jokes, and when questioned "Its just banter" "Its just ironic" "I'm obviously not referring to you". Bullshit.

Ha thanks, My old rowing coach, who I've stayed really close friends with, asked if I was okay afterwards. I said I was absolutely fine, and honestly relieved to have cancelled the wedding and she said "good, glad to hear it, he was never good enough for you"!

That's almost word for word what my mum said too! She also told me that my Dad had never really warmed to him and they both thought our children would have been miserable. And they've seen countless shite marriages in their time

Uuuuugh even though it had all been going stale for months, it was genuinely a gut punch out punch out of nowhere for him so I did actually feel pretty sorry for him (not enough to stay, like he thought I would if he showed some emotion for the first time literally ever) He tried a bit of the old guilt tripping tactic, saying he had stuck by me during a difficult period of my life, but I told him that while that was decent of him, it doesn't then mean I owe him the rest of my life in return when…

So true! The military man's defence for it is so lame as well, they all say "yeah well she wouldn't beat me if she was carrying a rifle and 100lbs of kit so actually my manhood is still in tact" Boooooorrrrrringggggg!

Look he might be a perfectly fine bloke. But even from your post it is clear he is not in an ideal place in his life, and it’s irresponsible of him to be talking about the big life questions with someone he barely knows. I get the impression you already know this AND he does too. From experience, the most likely outcome if you stick around with this man is you will nurture him and patch him back up.... and then he’ll suddenly realise you’re not the one for him, you’ve just been a necessary pit s…

Yeah she said she reported it to the lifeguard, but they hadn’t seen it and it was basically just her word against his. She left the pool for her own safety, told the manager just before she left and later phoned the police. They said they would look at CCTV footage, I don’t know any more than that. Just found the interview, it’s at 16:30: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m000xd20

Welcome! I too have learned in the last year, in no small part thanks to this sub, that women are fucking awesome. I’ve tried my whole life to be more like a bloke and distance myself from being considered ‘a mere female’, as though it’s lesser and shameful, but the closest you ever get is ‘quasi-non-man’ and no one respects you for it! It’s a revalation, knowing, accepting and loving who you are ⭐️⭐️

Agreed. It generally goes hand in hand with appalling arrogance - how could they have possibly done something less than perfect? And how could a woman possibly dare point it out?! I recently left the military, and there are thousands of men in positions of authority hiding their mistakes and refusing to accept criticism. Some of these mistakes could literally put lives in danger, but as you say ‘saving face’ is more important.

Yes so true, would have been a completely different story with my NVM ex. I would have ended up apologizing and being convinced it was my fault entirely. It’s been a revelation having a partner that respects me enough to take my opinions seriously

It didn’t start even remotely romantically - he set up what is basically a weekly reading club email for news and articles pertinent to our work, which was often quite lighthearted, and I started sending the odd reply as various characters (Sounds weird written down) so we would have a laugh about all that whenever we saw eachother. Our job also has a really sociable culture so we were able to get to know eachother on a personal level, but still in a safe neutral working environment. Think it wa…

I met him at work when all I cared about was being healthier, happier, fitter and better at my job. He pretty much fell out of the sky as a happy addition to my life.

Big respect 🙌 I have also had to do this. Eating disorders corrosive bastards and they are with you for life. Like an alcoholic, I know I will never be ‘recovered’ only ever ‘in recovery’ but the thoughts need facing every day and some days they are louder than others. I know I can’t be trusted with any sort of special diet or intensive exercise plan - I will just start taking it to the extreme and end up back in the hole again. I am an ex-international athlete (classic highly strung, highly com…

Ugh, preach sister 🙌 Diets are horseshit up there with ‘waist trainers’. Choose food and activities which keep you healthy and happy. Taking out your rage on your own body is the road to hell. Ref: lost 6 years of my life to a fucked up combination of anorexia, bulimia and over-exercising which started when I was being groomed by one of my teachers. It got me fucking nowhere.

Yes this is so true! Oh my god, perfectly describes a disgusting ex boyfriend. He was one of the many horrible manipulators using the language of mental health for his own controlling ends, knowing full well there was no calling him out on it or he could just label me heartless. It was remarkable how lucid he could become during one of his well-timed depressive episodes if he could point out that I was being insensitive to his needs. He would cultivate ‘depression and anxiety’ to fill in the gap…

Exactly. It’s really really difficult to navigate, when military professionalism is completely intertwined in masculinity, all your professional feedback comes from men, and everything you do or don’t do is seen as a counterpoint to men. It’s very disorientating, but I have a much keener sense of who I am now. I’m no small part thanks to FDS 🙌

Ah god, I remember being a bit like this when I was in the army, and the blokes never respected me more for it. So embarrassed now. You end up coming out with things to fit in, because your working environment is literally 98% men and men are responsible for promoting you, then you start believing it, then you see other women as a threat, then you end up in a really lonely place - not one of the women because you think you’re above being a woman, but certainly not one of the blokes either. I was…

They think it’s so well meaning as well. I remember being taken out of a lesson once at primary school, I must have been 4 or 5, because I was sitting cross legged on the floor and boys might see my knickers. Not that they might see any body parts, not that my 4 or 5 year old body had any sex organs that needed covering up and not that a bit of pink knicker fabric mattered in the slightest to boys who hadnt been conditioned to objectify women by then. I remember it making me feel really ashamed …

I was in a relationship once with a really disgusting man, I’ve posted about him before and FDS agree he was a pedophile. Anyway, I got a new job and he would try to make sure I didn’t make friends with anyone by pointing out all of their flaws and inconsistencies. One girl was very slim and quite clearly careful about food, and he would say she’s “obviously anorexic and clearly fucked in the head”. When in reality she could probably just see through the fact that he was a 25 year old fully fled…
