Warren Farrel claimed in 2005 book, Why Men Earn More, that danger is factor in higher pay, but I've heard passing reports of a study since finding there isn't even a premium for doing a dangerous job these days (as they require less qualifications presumably).

Conditions for men get worse when there's a surplus of men. The culture will become less forgiving of crimes by men, the women will become more "modest" (which really means, they'll hide, and only show themselves to a man who promises to pay) and there will be lots of men prepared to pay, as a surplus of men leads to extreme chivalry as a mating strategy.
