It seems you have your life together and the men you met were good and respectful. It aready shows that you are drawn to the good kind of men. It is more than many women can say, especially when they are so young :-) Virginity is only a red flag after some years and if you are unattractive (believe me...). Do not worry at all. You will definitely find someone you feel comfortable with and it seems you should keep trusting your gut as it saved you some heartache and regrets.

I call these phases "warming up" phases. I usually feel like I want to do something but there are so many parameters to take into account that I just stay still, pulled into many directions at once. And then something makes more sense than the rest and I dive in. Take up a couple of activities, for your own sake. First it will replace some of the overthinking by simple pleasure and enjoyment. Second you will meet new people and get out of your headspace a bit. As to TRP... as someone else said -…

You have a very honest way to talk about yourself. I can relate to your upbringing. My family was very abusive and it is only because they lied to social workers that they got out. I think you should not give up. You went this far. You survived an abusive childhood. You seem very articulate and self-aware which is rare nowadays, as everyone wants to pretend they are 10 times better than the rest. You seem to have a lot of qualities that men would be happy to find in a partner. I think you should…

My mother went bald very early on (undiagnosed, untreated PCOS + consequences of PTSD). I do understand how difficult it is, mentally and physically. I think dresses and skirts are always a safe bet: you don't mention what type of figure you have, but some 60s/vintage dresses are really feminine and make a wonderful, cinched waist, especially with some heels (even block heels or low heels will give you a nice sway). I personally never wear jeans cause I'm still too big and also cause I find it d…

I think less in terms of "who has the same money as me" but in terms of common cultural behaviours. I never lacked of anything but even when I started doing better financially I still was and looked the same. I personally don't care about other people social status, my social circle is made of people of similar levels - living abroad, late 20s to mid 30s, no house owners... they do reasonably well given the economy in my country. I place more stock into living within your means than display of s…

they are very obsessed with a woman’s past and even praise the female virgin. They praise the young, beautiful ones. Past a certain age... it is no longer praise-worthy and it becomes a red flag. My experience so far... well with online dating men were very forward and taken aback or derisive when I would say I had no experience at all. I went back to okcupid a few weeks ago and just saying 1 sexual partner sounds already more normal. As long as I do not say that it only happened once. One or tw…

"is it even worth it to put in the effort if I stay ugly anyway?" I did that often. I think that little by little, by being fit and healthy and looking as put together as you can, your positive attributes will sort of take over the less desireable ones. You may grow/cut your bangs to frame your forehead as you like; same for the nose, even if it's harder to deal with. I also found solace in admiring women with features I don't like in myself. If I find them beautiful despite them not having perf…

You sound like me when I was your age. Being assertive comes from inside: you have to believe that whatever you are trying to communicate is worth listening. And by extension, that you are worth being listened to. It took me a long time but I got there and people now listen to me. I developed charisma, a sense of humour... that's how I started to matter in social settings. I never had to shout or to behave in a masculine way; when you are ugly, you really cannot afford to be agressive unless you…

No, I didn't go on dates until two years ago. Given how I looked, I was treated quite poorly by men who were resentful to have to stoop so low. At best we would talk for an hour and then it was a polite goodbye and that was it, so I stopped after a few months. And as you pointed out in your other comment, having low self-esteem and being open about my past would have made me a perfect target.

Any books or online resources you'd recommend? I never really meditated.

I had sex once in my life at almost 28 years old as I explained it here: I had sex once two years ago, honestly to get over the phobia I had about it. I had a health scare and thought "What if I never have sex?". In retrospective well maybe that's what I needed to get over it. I was so terrified of men I couldn't even go on a date. It wasn't great overall and it left me shaken in many ways but I don't regret it, otherwise I would still be a virgin at 29 and with even a bigger phobia about sex an…

As others pointed out, I think honesty is valued but I should be more subtle about how I explain things I guess :) Thank you for your kind comment, I wish you well as well!

I think that in the office, you can learn so many things that will help you outside of it; I'll try to sum up a few things that I learnt over the 9 years I've been working - I work in a peculiar industry but it was always in an office setting so it may be of use to you :) Be very careful about social media: I had too many "Facebook drama" talks to count. Be conservative with your social media - don't add people on Facebook/Twitter or whatever after a few weeks and be careful about what you share…

This was an interesting thread, thank you for compiling it. I'm not sure how old you are but you seem to have a good head on your shoulders :) I'm almost 30 and I'm a manager, and there are many people older than that who do not know how to accept criticism at all. When it comes to receiving criticism, one thing I find helpful is to dissociate yourself from your work or whatever is under scrutiny. Not to shrug it off, of course, but to draw a line between what you do and what you are. I had to g…

Make it seem like your choice and never like guys were avoidig you. That's a good point. A few years back I would say stuff like that out loud to my friends, things like "Well of course I was rejected, who in their right mind would like me". And since my then "friends" wouldn't react, I took it as a quiet agreement that I was worthless and would never attract anyone. Now I get some interest once in a while and I'm a bit baffled by it but I try not to overthink it and just take it for a complimen…

I never had flings, I was unable to get physical to someone until very recently. I remember having my first sexual feelings about a man when I was 21. I'm happy to say I'm a pleasant person :) I worked for it to be fair, I was so damaged I was too scared to get to know anyone for a long time. I still have a therapist to help me deal with specific issues, but I'm definitely not unhinged, or irrationally angry for example.

The only thing I'd ever ask is "have you done X before?" usually in relation to sexual experience, but other than that I don't have questions about who or how many past partners you have had. If you don't mind me asking, how old are you? I'm 29 and I have less experience than a teenager. I kissed a man once, and had sex once. Do you think this would be a major red flag? I totally get that men prefer non-slutty women but I think there is the other extreme which is my situation, aka being so inexp…

Thanks a lot for the specific advice! I have good social skills and I'm good at getting people to like me, I'm very empathetic so I'm usually good at having healthy relationships (albeit it's only with friends or coworkers, I guess this is still important). I'm also used at dealing with criticism (another perk of my work I guess :D) and it's true that few things are as irritating as giving someone some constructive criticism and seeing them losing their mind or acting offended. I'm checking the …

Yes I think that for people with issues, social media can really impact your health. I had a Facebook account to keep in touch with my friends back home but over the years it made little sense to keep it. I have no idea about other types of social media but since the friends I have now do not use it either, I never felt the need to reactivate my account. And also I think it is so easy to spend an hour a day on Facebook and when you have a tendency to procrastinate it's a recipe for disaster :-D

It was not travelling, it was living in countries where I had a job. From 1 to 4 years, due to various circumstances. I am from an industry where it is pretty standard to live abroad for work so I would not worry about it as most men I know also are foreigners in their country of residence, like me :-)

Thank you for sharing this experience; it's different than mine but I do relate a lot to what you said here: Plus... it was a big part of my life. It's one of the many things that shaped me into the woman I am today. I feel the same about it. I am not ashamed, never was actually, because what happened to me as a kid, well I cannot control it and I wasn't responsible for it, and I always had a very healthy mindset despite the whole situation. But it is a part of my life, it's unavoidable. the tal…

Oh yes, definitely. I would rather like to find a man who was in my shoes; also because I'm kind of worried about STDs and things like that, but also because it displays a very different approach to sex and I don't think we would be compatible.

Thank you; I do agree with you, honesty is important; but as in my case it didn't really show modesty (it was not really a choice of mine) but was the consequence of what I lived before, I wonder if it'd have the same impact as a woman saying that she saved herself on purpose. I was mocked a few times for being a 27 year old virgin but I don't worry that much about the sex part, more about the emotional side of things I guess :)

Thank you for your input! Timing is important, sure. I would never disclose this information to someone I just met, as this is something I only talk(ed) about with very close friends, after years of friendship, but I guess this is different when something romantic is happening. I think if I were to get married (I do not think it will ever happen but who knows) or if the topic of kids were brought up, this would definitely be an unavoidable topic.

Thank you for your thoughtful comment. I think you're right, it's important for me because I think that only people who know what happened to me as a kid can understand exactly why I became the person I am now, warts and all! :) it will just happen when you talk about something and you have to answer spontaneously That's probably true; I guess I had something like "let's have a big talk about why you never had a boyfriend before" in mind haha.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
