It’s a lot harder to get by on one income these days and still support a wife and children and maintain a decent standard of living. In my area, the average salary can barely swing a two bedroom condo. The way the economy is set up, it puts a lot of pressure on the breadwinner. Religious fundie types and some older relatives are still absolutely a driving force in preventing women from doing as they wish. That said, I’d love for stay at home dads to become for socially acceptable as well.
