Well, technically, it's always unreasonable to commit fallacies because "fallacy" is the name of an error that is commonly made in reasoning. The problem here is the misunderstanding of what is and isn't a fallacy. It surely isn't fallacious to appeal to the opinion relevant experts (I mean, I'm fairly certain the moon isn't made of cheese because I have it on good authority.) That wiki article is really bad.

You should appeal to authority in an argument about what is reasonable to believe. It should be a genuine authority, though, like a medical journal rather than Wikipedia.

The expert opinion is that there are no reliable stats and the idea is conjecture. You have yet to link to even one source. You're literally just making things up. Show me the primary source where the experts say that the hypothesis that women attempt suicide more frequently than men is even remotely likely to be false. The CDC points out (it's in one if the sources I provided, by the way) that it's difficult to quantify precisely. Then, in the same paragraph, they say they take all cases of hos…

Well, thanks for proving that you literally just type out your opinion on things without having read them or reasoned about them. Here's The very first point I make in the post... 1 It's a true fact that more men die by suicide.

We also have no reason to believe A is true either. If someone is an expert about things having to do with A, and that person forms the expert opinion that A is true, that is sufficient reason to believe A. We must remain agnostic unless the evidence tells us otherwise. If you don't accept the opinion of experts as evidence, then you aren't a rational person If that's his argument then his counter claim is irrelevant as he is criticizing your argument. I literally, point by point showed that his…

You replied to the wrong person, presumably because you realize I'm not a gullible reactionary who can't put in the work.

Hey are women who kill themselves selfish? Yes. Have you ever told a depressed woman thinking about it that she'd be selfish bitch if actually did it? You're really sick. Why would you want to say this to men and women? Yeah the mentally ill sure are fuckers. I'm sorry, I didn't mean to insult you. I know that mental illness is difficult to deal with. And I don't look down on you. So you're ok with men killing themselves, you just wish they wouldn't inconvenience you when doing it? Why do you ke…

You keep claiming that we "know" things, for example, that most suicide attempts are successful on the first try. But if we know the percentage of suicide attempts that are successful then we have quantified suicide attempts. And if we've quantified suicide attempts, then your claim that there is no evidence about suicide attempts must be false. More, any fallacy involved with appeal to authority is an appeal to the authority of a non-expert. Medline is a professional journal and the CDC is, wel…

I'm also the only one who has linked to any support resources for suicidal people ITT, and as far as I can see, in this entire sub for the past 6 months. Yet there are a plethora of posts complaining about the crisis of men committing suicide and how no one cares to help or support them. I care enough to do this, while you're too busy being a racist stalker and a hypocrite. You're the one who behaves like a person who hates men, not me.

Ok, so the claim I make is that women attempt suicide more often than do men. Call this claim "A". I offered evidence, call it "E". You claim that A is false. Call your claim "B". You further deny that E is cogent evidence, and say there is no evidence for A. But if there is no evidence for A, it doesn't follow that A is false. And you present no evidence for B, you only suggest that E is not evidence for A. So you have presented absolutely no reason to believe A is false. Furthermore, if you ar…

Because highlighting the effect of a violent, gorey suicide might make people think twice about doing that to people. It is selfish to make some poor guy scrape your brains off the wall. People really should picture that before they decide to use a gun to kill themselves. It's also terrible to leave yourself hanging from a rope to traumatize the person who finds your body and possibly injures themselves trying to lift you up and save you. Maybe if people realize this, they'll choose pills and ha…

No, I never said anything like that. /u/TwoFootTwo apparently misread what I wrote. I was pointing out that the fact that there are higher rates of suicide among men is not a helpful thing for a person who wants to argue that men are more oppressed in US society to quote. This is because when the facts surrounding suicide are examined, it turns out not to be very helpful for their case. I commented more extensively about it somewhere ITT. I understand why you'd be afraid of a bad reaction if peo…

I volunteer with a PTSD suicide prevention hotline and helped about 30 men in boys while volunteering as a victim's advocate at a domestic violence shelter (run by feminists, btw.) What have you done for men except alienate them from the resources that could help them?

Show me the source for women attempting suicide more than men. Primary, not some re-post. You're not going to be able to. Except, wait, I'm totally able to. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8205283 Edit And another: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15652723 Edit And another: http://annals.org/mobile/article.aspx?articleid=717460

I just read on a feminist hate-sub that suicide is a bigger problem for women than men. The argument went like this: Although men commit suicide more often, women attempt it more often Women's suicide attempts often fail because they are less violent, and also because they take pills (the tool they have available) whereas men use guns (the tool they have available) Therefore, since women attempt more often, suicide affects women more than men, even though 300%-1000% more men die from suicide att…
