The ~402% difference between (normal) male and female suicide rates is staggering, that is for sure. My best explanations to this are three-fold: The larger difference suggests a bigger problem, and big problems are more needing of our attention (to solve), more news-worthy, etc. Because you have to create a context somewhere. I may not be understanding you correctly. Let's see if I know what you're saying. The larger difference in rates of suicide in women (from 'norm' to vet) is because (or heavily influenced by) there are less women in the military than men.

Well, the staggering part is the vast difference between 'normal' rates and veteran rates. Men: 20.9 normal vs 32.1 vets (11.2 difference, or ~54% increase from normal rates) Women: 5.2 normal vs 28.7 vets (23.5 difference, or ~452% increase from normal rates) Hence, 'staggering'. Edit: "rates" roughly equate to "percentage" - in this case, the rate is the number of people per 100,000
