Paternity has enormous long-term consequences; courts have unfairly saddled non-biological men with support and jailed men for failure to pay child support even when tests proved they were not the father. It's crazy they are actually illegal in France, and I suspect it's due to the social problems that would ensue from men finding out they aren't the biological fathers across the country.
