This is the end game of radical feminism and the flip side of Margaret Atwood's "The Handmaid's Tale". I used to be able to read the NYT, albeit with a grain of salt, but I just can't stand it anymore.

This is a good reminder that none of this stuff is really new. The book was published in 1952. There really was a time before second-wave feminism, the sexual revolution and the rise of mass media when the world mostly shrugged its shoulders at what we find so astonishing today. Or maybe every generation just has to relearn it.

Anger is one of the stages of grief. You must go through it. What are we grieving? Our lost illusions. Welcome to humanity gents. Welcome to adulthood. Great post.

I think Khrushchev's "Cult of personality" speech which criticized Stalin is a fascinating example of what can happen when the wool is pulled away from a lifelong held belief. It's disillusionment on a grand scale. "The speech caused such shock to the audience that, according to some reports, some of those present suffered heart attacks, and others later committed suicide." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/On_the_Cult_of_Personality_and_Its_Consequences

I think a lot of people do. It's a coping mechanism. People build bubbles as a sort of refuge of denial. RP recognizes that nature is harsh and brutal and that we are responsible for creating our own meaning in life. BP are like adults who still believe in Santa Claus. They live in a fool's paradise.

Marriage was originally 'invented' to minimize competitive violence over women among the men within the tribe. Tribes that adapted marriage grew stronger because they were more cohesive, eventually becoming whole societies. The implied promise of marriage is that all men get (at least) one woman and his paternity is 'guaranteed'. This builds trust in the social contract. Without that trust you have chaos. This is why marriage is tied so closely with religion and morality and is considered a pill…

The harder you try the harder it is. Just be the prize and they will come to you. Always be the prize.

Agreed. Context makes a big difference. In terms of traditional marriage: Several legitimate LTRs = still potential wife material Single ONS = Thanks but no thanks

I don't know about cheating statistics but the reason why a woman cheating is seen as worse boils down to this basic evolutionary fact: Women always know the child is theirs. Men don't.

You've lost frame with your wife. I've been where you are. Don't tell her but develop an exit strategy. Talk to a lawyer. You don't have to file but just having a plan and knowing you can act on it will change your state of mind and the power balance in the relationship will shift to you. Self respect is worth more than alimony. Life is short. You can be divorced and still be a good father to your kids. Maybe even a better one. You're in a covertly abusive relationship - a lot of men are. That's…
