It's not nice to talk about yourself like that.

I mean yeah. I have no problem understanding a view where you separate your faith from your politics.

The point of contention here isn't the specific higher power he subscribes to but more the idea that he believes in a higher power at all.

If the only thing keeping you from raping someone is that it's illegal, you've got a serious problem.

Endgame? Did you read the article? This woman is borderline retarded. There was no endgame.

They don't. They specifically mention that "real men don't abuse other men and women." Look. Right there. Both genders. They actually say that.

Isn't that implicit in the overall message? I mean, the entire purpose of the group is to teach them that what has been done to them is wrong and that it's never okay to treat anyone the way they've been treated.

So your disconnect here is that the support group's representative, when asked a question contextually specific to women, answered in the scope of a man behaving towards a woman? Jesus christ. Oh, and that gender neutral thing you're looking for? It's not just in the article, it's in my post you just replied to. Seriously. “We tell them that men struggle with things too, that men don’t have to be silent and that men don’t have to abuse other men and women.”

I'm with you on the "jokes as violence is ridiculous" bandwagon. I just don't read that sentence that way. Honestly, I wish they'd went another way with this line. However, one line from a journalist doesn't invalidate the merit of an entire men's support group program.

No, they just don't explicitly state it, because this is an article about a MENS GROUP. Their quote is focused on the MALE PERSPECTIVE.

Very true. Imagine the uproar it would cause though if young women were being mentored by scary evil adult men. -.-

You're absolutely right, but the scope of this group is just men. This article is about a men's support group. Why would they be saying anything about teaching women anything?

"women are perfect, and saying harmless jokes about them is literally violence." But it doesn't say that... mentors addressed the attitudes that contribute to men committing violence against women, such as seemingly harmless schoolyard jokes about women. I assume that's the line you're referring to here. They go on to say: “We want to show boys that real men stand up for women and treat women with respect.” They even say: “We tell them that men struggle with things too, that men don’t have to be…

Good point. I'm not actually sure how I feel about that. I definitely agree that there is a problem with how often that stereotype is brought up, but I'm not sure if this article is particularly guilty of that. It does bring it up, and focuses on that one part of the program, but I'm not sure if, in this context, that is necessarily a bad thing. On one hand, I feel it's important to recognize that these kids, having been raised in abusive households, are more likely to be abusers themselves. I f…

The only person blaming either gender here is you. This is a men's group helping young men who have been raised in an abusive household. The person to blame is the person who is abusive, whether it is a woman or a man. These kids need someone to talk to. They need someone to reach out and be there for them. This is a very limited scope. These are singular human beings, not men as a gender. I don't disagree with anything you're saying, I just feel like it's irrelevant to the scope of what these p…

Insulting someone for asking a question. Classy. How does that have ANY relevance to this article? They're taking boys from an abusive household and saying "Hey, it's okay to hate this. It's wrong. You should be above this." Some boys DO have an unhealthy attitude towards women. Some women DO have an unhealthy attitude towards men. Young people coming from an abusive household are statistically more likely to be part of that group. People are not all the same. Grouping all human beings up as one…

I think we're falling in to the same problems we all seem to have with feminism here. Just because something is uncommon for both genders doesn't mean it has no merit. I agree those programs absolutely SHOULD exist, but the fact that they don't doesn't make it a bad idea to teach our own gender that abuse is wrong.

Generally, I agree with you. But this seems to be a fairly focused group. "A lot of the boys referred to our program come from backgrounds where family violence is apparent" "There is a real focus on encouraging the boys to take control of their behaviours and not make excuses for violence" "We tell them that men struggle with things too, that men don't have to be silent and that men don't have to abuse other men and women" Isn't this the exact demographic you WANT to be teaching that violence i…

I feel like I'm missing something here. Could you please explain, what's "wtf" about this? EDIT: Thanks all for the insightful conversation. Even though we may disagree on particulars, it's clear we are all coming from a similar position. We all seem to have the best interests of men's rights at heart and it's fantastic to see everyone's different viewpoints.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
