Reading in particular - there's not much to show for it, but I also wouldn't call it unproductive, maybe even watching movies too. But yea, in those cases it does give you something to talk about, so maybe you could call the productivity the intellectual development. The person you're with doesn't have to also be into it at all. In fact sometimes it's better if they're not, because it gives you something to show them, or a new world to bring them into.
