Here's the video clip they are talking about. It's worth watching just for itself. You can tell by the facial expressions and body language of the kids and mother that the father's not some abusive monster. Definitely he slipped into pathological territory and became firmly entrenched there by not knowing how to return things to normal, feeling more stuck as time went on, but surely that is a psychological/mental health issue. Sadly, it seems that it could have been dealt with long ago with some…

Snyder found that women were more likely to receive criticism on their personality. For example: “You can come across as abrasive sometimes. I know you don’t mean to, but you need to pay attention to your tone.” Comments of this style illustrate the double bind phenomenon, which is the idea that an assertive woman can be seen as abrasive and brusque, whereas a woman who is friendly and stereotypically feminine can be seen as too soft, and not taken seriously. It's only a "double bind" if you ref…

The whole "mansplaining" thing puts me in mind of this analogy: If your goal is to climb to the top of the mountain, but you believe the little hill you are sitting on is the mountain, then in your mind there's no need to even stand up. You don't need to travel if you're already there. In reality, behind you in the one place you refuse to look, is the mountain that dwarfs the little hill you are sitting on. When someone comes up to you and points behind you and says, "Well, if you head off in th…

One of the comments was very informative: I have seen firsthand the abuse of gender in these situations where critical feedback with a proposed corrective action plan is provided and the woman claims harrassment and gender bias against the manager. In each case I witnessed, the claims were false and were proven so, but the investigation left scars on the managers and made them extremely hesitant to offer honest and critical feedback to female employees in the future. One individual even gave up …

My take is that the artist genuinely can't wrap their head around the abuse of men. They see the man as "silly" and the woman as "sympathetic" (read the comments). There seems to be some kind of massive blind spot in many people where men who are abused are pathetic because (as with the man in this picture) men should be physically capable of defending themselves from a woman's attack. If he doesn't then, (as in this picture) the image of him is as some mewling, self-pitying, "silly" figure. Of …

I think that one think that needs to be done is to acknowledge the fucking elephant in the room. It's easy to advocate men opening up and talking to someone about their fears and depression, but men typically don't get the same reaction women get for doing so. Don't advise a depressed man to open up and talk unless you know he has someone who is willing to hear him out with genuine compassion; otherwise, it's just an extra kick in the teeth when you have people treating you like your depression …

You're welcome. Edited to add: noticed on re-reading that you aren't living with your mother. This puts you in a much better position, regardless. Good luck to you.

I think you have every right to be upset. She has basically told you that she supports the happiness of any woman you impregnate over your happiness, no matter what prior understandings you had with the woman, or what it will cost you. It's scary when women exhibit this kind of in-group preference while seeming blind to it and the pain they cause the men in their lives by casually expecting them to sacrifice their happiness for women they may not even presently know (e.g. future girlfriend/wife)…

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
