That isn't exactly correct TracyMorganFreeman. While children are dependent in both scenarios, women were considered dependents before they joined the work force but are dependent no longer. When women join the work force, the dependent population decreases. Obviously 'true' depedents stay dependent but that it is what social infrastructure is for. If a woman earns enough to offset the cost of child care then there is a net economical gain for both the household and society as a whole.

Of course there are a whole slew of other factors and linear regression has cut the gap down to 5-10%. I would just like to point out that neither socialism or communism is about giving people more responsibility than they deserve in order to get some kind of 'equality'. It is about redistribution of limited resources to the benefit of those worst off. Heavily taxing everyone then using that money to make a minimal level of housing accessible to everyone is "communism". Making sure that just as many women have nicer homes as men is not.

I'm a little under 6' and I go on nice runs at 3 am down to the water and back. One time I did it topless (it was about 8 degrees C). Never once felt particularly afraid. Even when a loud angry black man was assaulting random people (he shoved a smaller white guy to the ground). Outward shows of confidence probably make a fair difference. Also being in Canada :P

Most people that refer to it are actually talking about communicating negative feelings like fear, discomfort, vulnerability which has nothing to do with femininity as those feelings are felt by every person on Earth.
