That's a beautiful train of thought. Once you have digested the literature in the sidebar and seen it applied in a few field reports there is nothing more to learn. Go out, try it out, evaluate yourself, adjust. Rinse and repeat.

In the name of self-improvement, I suggest you read the original novel as well. It's pretty short, available for free and Guy de Maupassant counts as a classic.

If she demanded equal pay... Equal to whose? Didn't she just ask for more money? You're putting an incredible amount of spin on this. From USA Today: "More than a dozen current and former members of the editorial staff, all of whom spoke to Politico on the condition of anonymity, described her as stubborn and condescending, saying they found her difficult to work with." The story was widely derided at the time as sexist.

If I were right about ugly women declining to participate more often than ugly men, that would clearly introduce a bias towards beautiful women. Again, this seems plausible because the society judges women more strongly based on their looks, which will cause some degree of self-consciousness. Since the tests subjects (chosen how?) have to agree to participate, this is not truly random. It seems plausible ugly females are more self-conscious than the males and a higher fraction of them declined.
