Oof. Yeah, nothing a horror story like that to highlight the importance of having someone in your corner. This really puts it in perspective. I think I'll be looking for a lawyer in the morning.

That's what I told her. If I'm going to have to live at my parents' house in order to get by for a while, she can definitely do the same. She wasn't happy about that at all.

I think that seems like a good plan. If I can keep it out of the papers then I can do it on my own terms as needed.

I think you're right about alimony probably not amounting to much. Our state doesn't have an official spousal support calculator, but it sounds like she must have used some type of calculator with her lawyer and that even with her potential income at minimum wage it didn't result in anything substantial. That's a good point about making sure everything is supported by documentation. Thank you for your help.

Thank you, that seems like sound advice. She's mentioned wanting to become a therapist, but she would need a master's degree which would mean even more school. It's hard to know how seriously to take her since this is literally the first time in 13 years that she's brought it up. Regardless, you're absolutely right that I can't jeopardize myself financially.

That makes sense, thank you!

That sounds like a good plan. I've got a friend who is a lawyer, just not family law. If he doesn't want to read through it for me maybe he can point me in the right direction. Thank you!

That's what I was afraid of. There hasn't been any paperwork or anything yet since she still needs to give me the papers first. Fortunately for her, her parents are paying for her lawyer. I'm not sure I could afford one.

I don't have an attorney right now. I'm hoping to avoid getting one if I can.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
