What about a man that wants you to move closer to him before making that decision? My boyfriend and I have been dating for 7 months and we live a few hours apart. We spend weekends together about 4 times a month early on, now about 2 times a month as we’ve had a lot of other commitments this summer. He has consistently moved the relationship forward, includes me in his future plans, and asks my opinions about far-off plans (5-10 years away). We recently met each others’ parents. We have not talk…

That’s a positive way to look at it - you made a good point that he cares enough to do it/that I would find out. So far he has treated me well otherwise, he’s consistent, thoughtful and communicative. He takes care of me in little ways that I love. I’ve been vulnerable with him about a few things and he has been nonjudgmental and supportive. I definitely don’t feel ending it over this one thing would be the right decision but I’ll have to keep vetting.

I needed the reality check, most likely he was just looking her up just to look because she’s hot. Still doesn’t feel good but what can I do. I’ve stalked her profile a few times (I hate that I get obsessive but it’s so hard not to compare myself) and I noticed he went back and unliked a bunch of her pictures that I remember he had liked. Pictures of only her (regular pictures, bikini pics) as well as cute pictures with her fiancé - but not all the pictures. I never brought anything up with him …

I’m really not sure if it’s just anxiety talking. I’ll have to explore that. I’m sorry I have so many questions for you but I appreciate your insight! How would you suggest gliding around the issue of whether he uses friends’/friends’ SO’s pictures as sexual material? I’d rather not ask outright but the only strategy I could think of is an eventual game of truth or dare (a fun, light moment).

That’s fair. He has told me he hasn’t been interested in a casual hookup for the past few years . I know last year he was in an undefined exclusive relationship with a woman he liked but didn’t feel strongly about and was dating for the meantime until he moved. He told me he was very upfront with her about the relocation situation and didn’t lead her on about continuing the relationship after the move, and she held out hope regardless - but I can only hear his side. He has made comments and aske…

Do you really think so? I know he’s used to being noncommitted based on his past. He has had exclusive relationships but nothing that serious/committed. We live about 2 hours away from each other and take turns driving to the other’s city each weekend. Seems like a lot of trouble when he could find someone more convenient in his city. He does talk about the future occasionally, like asking me questions about whether I’d be willing to move to X city for his career years down the line. We also are…

You’ve given me a lot to think about and I appreciate your insight. I also have a lot of questions. I wonder, after how much time would it be appropriate to bring up the conversation about following exes/ex flings on social media? Would it be a bad idea to probe why he deletes his search history? And would it be a bad idea to broach a conversation about sexual material? Like women he personally knows being a boundary for me?

I agree it’s ridiculous, I have functioning eyes. And we’re always vetting. He deleted his search history again after looking up his friend’s fiancée, so unless he looked up anything else he didn’t want me to see (there was a day in between) he deleted her for a reason. It feels right to me to pay close attention for a while before making a decision.

I like the idea of asking questions in a curious way that doesn’t put him on edge. It’s too late for this situation but I’ll keep that in mind for next time something like this comes up.

It just feels way too personal. He can look at any woman in the world, why his friend’s girl? I don’t want to think about him lusting after her when I meet her - but now I will. I understand it’s too early in the relationship to act possessive. But I worry about wasting months or years with a man that’s sexually undisciplined, potentially wishes he could have sex with his friends’ girls, and indulges that desire.

What would you do?

I do think my intuition is telling me something - and maybe my anxiety is running with it. So just continue observing and vetting for now. I thought he was trustworthy until this but this reminded me I don’t really know him that well. Another commenter brought up the question of why he deletes his search history. He isn’t following a bunch of weird accounts but he is mutually following a lot of women from his high school and college days, including women he has hooked up with.

We were searching something together on his phone. Like I said, he has not been secretive with his phone so far. It’s hard not to look when he’s showing me? I didn’t ask him because he clearly didn’t want me to see it - he probably forgot he hadn’t cleared his history after looking her up.

Can I ask how you got into that? I'm thinking of a career change from healthcare and I'm interested in AI and machine learning but not sure if self-teaching is feasible.

This is my experience as well, when early on (first few dates) men allow me to pay the bill or split the bill without protesting, they were not into me. The men that were into me straight up told me "I don't like that" or were clearly uncomfortable at the thought of splitting or my paying.

More out of practicality, I'll bring the flowers into the restaurant and ask the server for a vase of water to put them in to keep them fresh. If he is picking me up though, I'll leave them in a vase at home before we head out.

But as a "red blooded", I wasn't wound up about her like I had been about been about others. I'm trying to understand - do you (i.e. men in general) know from the moment you meet a woman, from the first date, that you feel "wound up" about her and that is what motivates you to keep pursuing her? And do you know what made you feel that way?

You’re acting from a place of scarcity right now and not from a place of plenty. Keep moving! I reached out to him before I saw all these replies, and he let me know he didn't feel a spark. I've had a few romantic rejections recently and am not feeling my best. That's probably showing up in my energy. I'm wondering if I should continue talking new men (whom I'm already talking to, no dates yet) or take a break and focus on myself.

Second this. It’s not necessarily anything OP did, sometimes you can just tell there’s no chemistry there. Usually you can feel a spark when you’re with someone you mesh with. Not everyone is going to be compatible with everyone What does it mean if I felt it but he didn't? By the way this guy isn't physically out of my league.

You were on the ball, I reached out and he let me know he didn't feel a spark. He was very kind about it. I've dealt with a lot of romantic rejection lately, which I'm not used to in the early stages of dating. I've never felt this disappointed after a first date. I feel like my self-confidence has taken a hit and my energy probably isn't right to get right back into dating (there are other men I'm talking to, no dates yet). I'm thinking of taking a break. But I'm also feeling the pressure of ti…

By the way, I quite literally have never met a man with protective instincts like the man I just ended things with. He looked after my physical safety in a way no one has before, and I realized how much I valued that - that was one of the most attractive things about him, to me. I also think I assumed his protective instincts mean he cared more for me than he really did. Do you have any insight/advice about finding men with strong protective instincts?

Thank you. I feel like the number one thing I learned from this most recent experience is to trust my intuition. I felt a constant anxiety about this man from the beginning, before I was emotionally invested in him - I'd forgotten about that when I wrote this post. And I suppose part of my closed-offness stemmed from that anxiety. I'd never felt that way from the beginning before with other men who turned out to be serious about me. Even if I'd made none of the mistakes I made, he would probably…

Regret tends to stay with me; it's hard to let it go. As far as going forward, I'm in therapy to work on fears and shame (mostly stemming from family issues). I want to work on living in my body, which I often feel disconnected to, rather than always living in my brain. Work on being warm and open with others, and not letting fears of potential judgment, of being out of my comfort zone, of doing/saying the wrong thing hold me back.

YOU feel like there will never be a man like him again because you pair bonded to these men, but statistically, there are probably hundreds, if not thousands of men just like him in your metro-area Thank you for your kind and actionable advice. When you said the above, it helped put things into perspective - I've had the feeling that "I'll never meet someone like him again" about multiple men. And then I meet someone different that I also like/love, and always more than the last. I want to pract…

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
